Sean Williams sentenced to 95 years

GREENEVILLE — Sean Williams, who was convicted of escape as a federal detainee and child pornography charges, was sentenced to 95 years in prison Monday.He was sentenced in federal court in Greeneville to 60 months for his escape and 360 months each on three counts of enticing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of manufacturing child pornography. He was convicted in July and November, respectively.Williams, who was notably silent during his child pornography trial, was smiling and talkative Monday. He could be seen laughing while speaking with his legal counsel Mark E. Brown and rocking his swivel chair back and forth.Judge J. Ronnie Greer entered the courtroom at 9:02 a.m.The prosecution said there were "common themes" that Williams' victims all shared: shame, guilt and doubt. His victims are not the ones who should be feeling such things, Greer was told.While reiterating that Williams had been sexually assaulting women since at least 2008, the prosecution made reference to a letter they had seen indicating Williams had engaged in the "harassment of women" as far back as 1998.Also pointed out to Greer were the deliberate nature of the files located on electronic storage devices in Williams' possession when he was arrested in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on April 23, 2023. Images and videos were placed in a complex folder structure.Williams used Adobe Photoshop to make what he referred to as "rape collages" and what the prosecution described as "trophies of his acts," including non-sexual images of his victims taken from, at least in some instances, social media. Some of these non-sexual images were paired with sexually explicit photos of the victim.The prosecution referred to Williams as "meticulous" and his actions as "premeditated," warning Greer that Williams is "not done" and revealing that razor blades were found in William's shoes on his way to court that morning."He deserves no mercy from this court. He deserves no mitigation." Rather, the prosecution said the victims and their families deserve hope and mitigation.Greer asked about the fact that prosecutors were attempting to identify two other child victims that appeared in the files in Williams' possession. Greer was told by the prosecution that the content featuring the unidentified children were of a sexual nature and that one of the victims was conscious when Williams assaulted them, a departure from Williams' known modus operandi of rendering his victims unconscious. Greer was also told that Williams' face was visible in at least one instance in files featuring the unidentified children.Brown told Greer that no matter what the court decided to sentence his client to, it would effectively be a life sentence. He argued for a 35-year sentence.Brown also criticized his client's actions, calling them "horrific." "You'd have to be less than human not to find it horrific," he said.Williams spoke to the court prior to being handed down his sentence."I congratulate Ms. (Meghan) Gomez (the lead prosecutor) on that dramatic performance and Photoshop skills," Williams began, seemingly implying that the images Williams was found guilty of manufacturing using Photoshop were created by the prosecution.Williams told Greer nothing he could say would change the fact that he was going to be handed what amounted to a life sentence, but he said the problem was bigger than him."The allegations made against me are nothing more than an elaborate distraction," said Williams.He spoke vaguely of "government transparency" and "public awareness." He referred to following a "money trail," a likely reference to allegations of corruption by the Johnson City Police Department. He repeated the false claim that he was "forced" to represent himself in his escape trial. He blamed "workings behind the curtain" for what he deemed to be injustice.Williams maintained his innocence.At one point, Williams asked Greer if he could be sentenced to 1,111 months in prison. "1-1-1-1," Williams said. "Always liked that number." An agitated-looking Greer said he would note Williams' request.Williams, who was standing when speaking, said he had injured his ankle and his leg was hurting. Greer gave him permission to sit down.Greer called Williams an "organized, methodical sexual predator of women and children.""You are an unrepentant defendant," he said. "What I just heard (in Williams' remarks to him) underscores a lack of respect for the law, the court and perhaps above all else, people."He criticized Williams for showing no remorse or acceptance of responsibility in his remarks to the court. "I expected to hear some expression of remorse or regret for the harm you have caused your victims. What I heard was a claim that you are somehow an innocent victim of egregious prosecution from the government. Nothing could be further from the truth."Greer said it was ironic that Williams was seeking "hope" through his sentence when he had taken hope away from his victims."You've had fairness, due process and a jury has spoken," he told Williams.Greer said he was unsure of how Williams could have acted for as long as he did without being detected, but said that was perhaps something for "a different day."Greer told Williams that life sentences should be only for the "most egregious" of cases. "This is one of those cases," he said.The public would only be safe from Williams if he were to serve the rest of his life in prison, according to Greer. He called Williams' actions "especially heinous" and said being a serial killer would be the only thing he could imagine as being worse.In response to this, Williams laughed and shook his head."You can smile and shake your head if you want to," Greer said."That's shocking that you would compare taking pictures of women to murder," said Williams.Greer chastised Williams and Williams attempted to respond again."I don't want to hear anything else from you," Greer said sternly.He referred to some of the graphic images and videos shown to the jury in his child pornography production trial.At one point, Greer said Williams put a body part in a child's mouth. "Only somebody who's completely out of touch with reality would say that isn't serious," Greer said.Greer reprimanded Williams for the lifelong trauma he would cause his victims."I don't care if you understand it or not, Mr. Williams," Greer stated.Greer resorted to letters victims had written to the court. One such letter stated there were "no words" to describe the pain that Williams' actions caused. The author said they were traumatized by having to take their 8-year-old to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases and felt an "unbearable weight of feeling" that she had failed her child.Most distressful, Greer said the woman wrote, was the loss of their daughter's innocence."You took that from her, Mr. Williams," Greer said. Williams smiled and shook his head."I see the shake of the head, I see the smile," Greer told Williams, before saying perhaps Williams was incapable of rehabilitation. He said Williams had "irreversibly" altered the lives of his victims in ways that Williams simply could not comprehend."You continue to scheme," he said to Williams. He said only someone with the characteristics of a psychopath or a sociopath would laugh at a life sentence."It is clear to the court that Mr. Williams does not comprehend the harm done," Greer said, noting that his victims will never be able to walk past 200 East Main Street in downtown Johnson City without having to relive their trauma.Hearing news about Sean Williams will also cause them trauma, stress and pain, Greer said. Above all else, he said, Williams' victims will lack the ability to trust other people.Greer cited Williams' "repeated efforts to delay proceedings" and to not cooperate with attorneys in responding to Williams' false claim that he was forced to represent himself. He reiterated that Williams was not "forced." Rather, the court found that Williams had effectively waived his right to counsel by employing stalling tactics.Williams will likely not be deterred from crime, Greer said."You worked hard to get where you are today," he told Williams.Greer said Williams had told him that he could hardly read or write previously when discussing serving as his own defense in his escape trial."I can read and write fine," Williams said."Then you lied to me when you said otherwise," Greer responded.Greer sentenced Williams to a total of 95 years in prison."I know it's not the 1,111 you requested," Greer said."That's okay," a smiling Williams responded.Greer ordered Williams to serve his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution, Elkton, a low-security prison for male inmates in Lisbon, Ohio.U.S. Marshal David Jolley, who led the search for Williams after his escape from custody, called Williams an "evil, depraved monster.""I won't even call him a human being. He's not a human."He said he would warn the Ohio facility to be particularly wary of Williams, as he believed Williams would "continue" to try and escape.
