Cumberland semifinals: Davidson's 3 lifts Lady Titans into title game against Burton; Raiders, Spartans win

CASTLEWOOD — Sarah Davidson kept the Twin Springs girls basketball team alive with her lockdown defense. Her final shot helped the Lady Titans lock up a region berth.Davidson knocked down the winning 3-point basket with 13 seconds left, as Twin Springs pulled the 44-43 upset over Eastside in Tuesday's Cumberland District semifinals at Castlewood High School."Someone on my team told me to shoot it. I think it was Kenzie (Gillenwater)," Davidson said. "I was just like I have to shoot it. What does it matter, we're down, and I just shot the ball. I was just ready."The junior can't recall hitting a bigger shot in her Twin Springs career, especially with the Lady Titans' postseason fate potentially hanging in the balance.She just happened to be the only Lady Titan to hit double figures. Her winning 3-pointer gave her 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. In addition, Davidson grabbed six rebounds and stole the ball twice with one block, playing the entire 32 minutes for Twin Springs (15-9).Equally if not more important, Davidson held one of Eastside's top two scorers — Kaylie Rasnick — to just two points."Sarah, that might be one of the best performances in the district tournament that we've had in the last four or five years," Twin Springs coach Robin Tiller said. "Her number one job was to lock (Rasnick) down, which she did."Shelby Stanley, who led the Lady Spartans (11-13) with 18 points, put Eastside ahead 42-39 with 1:43 to play. Davidson stole the ball and laid it in with 1:19 to play and make it 42-41. Eastside made 1-of-2 free throws before Davidson's game winner, after which the Lady Titans forced a contested shot with time running out.Addy Bays, who tied the score at 32 with her layup late in the third quarter, and Aubrey Meade both scored nine points for Twin Springs. All of Meade's points came on a trio of 3-pointers. Bays dished out a team-high four assists, while Meade matched Kenzie Gillenwater and Davidson with two steals.Gillenwater neared a double-double, scoring eight points with 14 rebounds. She and Emma Ross, who also scored eight points, blocked two shots each.Drew Damron scored 13 points with six rebounds for Eastside. Rasnick and Dakota Clay both had four steals.The Lady Titans will face John I. Burton for the Cumberland District title on Saturday, after Eastside and Rye Cove face off for third place and a Region 1D berth on Friday.John I. Burton 57, Rye Cove 42Sarah Williams recorded a double-double for the Lady Raiders, who never looked back after scoring 11 straight points on a run which carried over to the third quarter. Burton (19-3) led 34-22 at that point and held a double-digit advantage the rest of the game.Williams shot 10-of-17 and scored 21 points with 11 rebounds, and a team-high six assists. Kaylee Lamb and Azzy Hammons joined her in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.Jalynn Rogers had a double-double of her own for Rye Cove, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 boards. She matched Lexi Shupe with a team-high two steals.Burton led 7-1 in the first quarter, but the Lady War Eagles (14-11) stormed back to take a 12-11 lead when Lexi Holland buried a 3-pointer. The Lady Raiders responded with a 9-2 run and never trailed again. Rogers tied the game at 21 midway through the second quarter, before Chloe Branham's runner gave Burton the lead for good.Holland scored nine points with grabbed nine rebounds, and Alex Goins had eight points with four assists.BOYSJohn I. Burton 55, Twin Springs 53Tyson Welch's timely baskets helped No. 3 seed John I. Burton pulled the upset on regular season co-champion Twin Springs.Welch buried three triples and scored 15 points with four rebounds and two steals, his layup with 1:05 left giving the Raiders a 50-45 lead.Jonathan Berg and Clay Ross kept Twin Springs within 54-53 on their 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds, while Jake Reynolds' free throws helped Burton stay in the lead. Tristan Vicars' 3-point heave from near mid-court narrowly missed at the buzzer.Reynolds went 9-of-11 at the foul line with eight rebounds and two blocks, finishing with 13 points. Ian Tate (5-of-6) scored 11 points, with Alex Colley adding nine. Colley and Tate both had five boards.Ross led Twin Springs with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for another double-double. He and Vicars, who scored 15 points, both dished out four assists. Jacoby Dunn, who went 3-of-4 from 3-point range, had 10 points.Burton will face Eastside for the Cumberland District championship on Saturday, after the Titans face rival Rye Cove on Friday for third and a Region 1D berth.Eastside 79, Rye Cove 53The Spartans never looked back after jumping out to a 17-0 lead.Rye Cove showed signs of life early in the second quarter, as Landon Lane's 3-pointer made it a 23-12 game. But Eastside responded with a 13-4 run to build a comfortable advantage.Gabe Raymond and Phillip Clay led the way as four players hit double figures. Both players had 14 points and combined for 13 rebounds. Chase Williams and Landon Pannell scored 12 each . Will Johnson scored nine, Noah Hamilton eight and Payton Adkins grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out six assists. As a team, Eastside held a 39-23 rebounding advantage.Luke Jessee led Rye Cove with 24 points, hitting four 3s and matching Lane with three assists. Lane hit three triples en route to an 11-point night. Hamilton Osborne and Trevor Darnell both had six points.
