Johnson City school board candidate: Kathy Hall

Incumbent Republican candidate Kathy Hall is running for the Johnson City Board of Education in a contested race in the Nov. 3 State and Federal General Election. With four seats up for election and five candidates in the running, the Johnson City Press invited each candidate to share their perspective on key issues; below are Hall's responses: The following answers have been edited for clarity. Q: What skills, experiences or perspectives will you bring to the board? A: With more than 20 years on the Johnson City Board of Education, I've seen firsthand what makes our system successful: a commitment to students, recruiting and supporting exceptional teachers and strong leadership. My leadership experience at both the district and state levels gives me a clear understanding of how to lead and support a strong school system. Q: What is your number one priority if elected and why? A: I'm proud of our school system and everything it has accomplished. As one of the top-rated districts in the state, we've built a strong and supportive learning environment for students, and my priority is to protect that while continuing to improve our programs and stay ready for future challenges. Q: If elected, what would you like to see happen or change during your time on the school board? A: I want to continue to build on the strengths that have made Johnson City Schools one of the most successful districts in Tennessee. As we begin a long-term planning process, I'd like to see us strengthen communication, engage our community, support teachers and expand opportunities for students. Q: What do you think is the most pressing issue currently facing schools? A: Maintaining our focus on excellence means we need to continue to support students, families and teachers. Helping students navigate a changing employment culture, increased needs at home and greater pressures in the outside world takes strong leadership, consistent support and innovative thinking. Q: How will you ensure members of the community are represented during school board discussions and decisions? A: A school board is made up of community members, and our strength comes from staying connected to the people we represent and serve. I actively reach out to parents, teachers, students and staff to hear their perspectives. I'm committed to keeping conversations open, transparent and reflective of the values our community cares about.
