Chris Eubank Jr retracts corruption allegations against Eddie Hearn, Robert Smith

Chris Eubank Jr has apologised and said a settlement has been agreed after he accused Eddie Hearn and Robert Smith of corruption.Eubank, 37, claimed at an ill-tempered press conference ahead of his rematch against Conor Benn in September 2025 that Smith -- the general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) -- and Matchroom promoter Hearn were using the fines imposed on him in order to "line their own pockets".He also alleged Smith was "in the back pockets" of Matchroom and Hearn. In a social media post on Thursday, Eubank said he accepts that "these statements are untrue and without any foundation"."I accept that neither Mr Smith nor the Board are corrupt and I retract my statements in full," Eubank Jr said. "I have agreed a settlement of these matters on confidential terms. The parties now consider the matter resolved. I apologise for the harm caused to both Mr Smith and the Board."pic.twitter.com/pLeBhl8Gu6-- Chris Eubank Jr (@ChrisEubankJr) October 1, 2026Eubank beat Benn by unanimous decision in the first of their highly-anticipated bouts in April 2025, before Benn won the rematch by the same method seven months later.Eubank incurred three fines ahead of making the accusations, the most notable of which at £375,000 ($500,000), after he arrived late to the weigh-in and fractionally missed weight. He was also fined £100,000 after he slapped Benn with an egg during their first press conference in February 2025. That was in reference to Benn being cleared of a failed anti-doping test after the WBC found his "highly-elevated consumption of eggs" to be a "reasonable explanation" for the failed test. The initial failed doping test meant the originally-scheduled bout between Eubank and Benn for November 2022 was cancelled. In July 2025, Eubank was fined £10,000 by the BBBofC for "misuse of social media" after posting several videos that appeared to show him attempting to cut weight for the Benn fight in brutal fashion, while also referencing saunas. While there is no specific mention of saunas in the BBBofC's 2026 regulations, that method of cutting weight is reported to be banned by the British authority.Eubank (34-4-0) was previously involved in legal proceedings with Queensberry promoter Frank Warren. Warren opened defamation proceedings against Eubank in December 2024 he was accused of "lying and cheating his way through boxing for the last couple of decades".That case was settled outside of court in May 2025.This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
