Daniel Boone routs Cocke County in road victory

NEWPORT — Daniel Boone won big in all phases of the game in a blowout win at Cocke County on Friday night at Larry Williams Stadium. Mykah Lucas threw four touchdowns and Dru Fleming ran for 201 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-6 Region 1-5A victory. Daniel Boone (2-4) was efficient with just 267 yards on 20 plays in the first half. Lucas connected on touchdown passes of eight and nine yards as the Trailblazers took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. "The quarterback played well. Mykah is getting better and better," Boone coach Jeremy Jenkins said. "We told ourselves we wanted to get healthy and make a stretch run in the conference. That started tonight with this win. This is a tough place to play, but a lot of good things happened to us tonight." The Trailblazers kept the hammer down in the second quarter. Fleming rushed for a 5-yard touchdown. Later, Reid McNeely took a screen pass from Lucas and turned it into a 44-yard touchdown. Cocke County got on the scoreboard when Braelyn Talley scrambled and found Jaquel Ladd, who scored on a 9-yard touchdown Boone answered with a strike from Lucas to a wide-open Briton Snyder who raced 51 yards to the end zone. The Trailblazers held a commanding 35-6 at halftime. Fleming surpassed 200 yards on the first drive of the second half. He broke free on a 56-yard run to the end zone, that was taken off the scoreboard for a block in the back at the 2-yard line. That was no problem for Fleming who later capped off the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. He finished with 201 yards on just 13 carries, and was arguably as impactful on the other side of the ball, blowing up a play when the Fighting Cocks attempted a reverse. "I know he did a lot of good things for us on offense, but one of the most important things was a fourth-down stop when they run some messy stuff," Jenkins said. "He knocks the ball loose, and just had a big game all-around for us." Lucas completed 6 of 9 passes for 125 yards with his four touchdowns and Barton hauled in the two touchdown receptions. All the skill players were able to flourish thanks in large part to the Trailblazers winning up front. "We did a lot of good things at the line of scrimmage," Jenkins said. "Tristan Kirkland had a big game for us at defensive end, and Reid McNeely really played well on both sides of the ball. Chevy (Shipley) keeps getting better at linebacker for us. He made a lot of big plays for us. Austin Hughes and Hunter Gallo had big games too." NEXT UP The path gets harder for Cocke County with two-time state finalist Sevier County the Fighting Cocks' next opponent. Daniel Boone gets to savor itswin as the 'Blazers have a week off before hosting Jefferson County on October 9. "This is something we can build on," Jenkins said. "We still have to get better in a lot of areas, but we made a big step forward tonight."
