Wasps stung by Tusculum; UVA Wise drops to 0-3

EMORY — Tedros Gleaton threw for 90 yards and a touchdown and added 81 yards and another score on the ground as Tusculum stunned Emory & Henry, 28-26, in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium. Tusculum (2-1, 1-0), which was picked to finish last in the SAC in the preseason coaches poll, was able to build a 28-17 second half lead and then stopped a late two-point conversion attempt by the Wasps to secure the win. Abingdon graduate Cole Lambert threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns to Khyair Lundy (3-124) and Parker Prioleau (5-50), the son of former Virginia Tech defensive back Pierson Prioleau, who is currently the safeties coach with the Hokies. De'Ante Childs ran for 96 yards and a touchdown for the Wasps (1-2, 0-1), which has sandwiched losses to Valdosta State (38-10) and the Pioneers around a win at Ferrum (55-16) last week. Tusculum took advantage of missed tackles on a couple of plays, with Keithan Washington getting loose along the sidelines and running 21 for a score, and Ashton Hagans caught a pass in the same manner from Gleaton, broke away from several Wasps and finished off a 59-yard touchdown. Gleaton had a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Ja'Von McMahan had what proved to be the game-winning score on a 3-yard run, followed by one of four extra point kicks by Science Hill graduate Max Turan. Asher Frisbee had a pair of field goals for the Wasps. De'Quadre Currence paced the Wasps on defense with eight tackles and two assists. Marc Harris and Trey McBride had eight assists apiece. Greg Williams led the Pioneers with three tackles and seven assists. Former Dobyns-Bennett standout Gavin Cummerford got his second career collegiate start on the offensive line for the Wasps. Christian Wilson (Volunteer) and Trent Dowdell (Tennessee High) also saw action for the Wasps. Emory & Henry will look to bounce back next Saturday with a trip to Catawba, while Tusculum will host Anderson on the same afternoon. A moment of silence was held in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America, in addition to honoring former Emory & Henry head coach Curt Newsome, who died of cancer in May. Wilson Edwards threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns and Cade Eavenson had a big game on defense to lead Anderson past UVA Wise in a South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday at Carl Smith Stadium. UVA Wise (0-3, 0-1) fell behind 19-0 midway through the third quarter and wouldn't get any closer than 11 points the rest of the way. Beason McCalan threw for 208 yards and a touchdown for UVA Wise, which was led in rushing by Evan Kennedy with 44 yards. Hunter Purdue had six receptions for 75 yards for the Cavaliers, while Thomas McCoy caught a 10-yard touchdown pass to get UVA Wise on the board with 7:29 left in the third quarter. McCalan also ran for two scores from 1 and 6 yards. Anderson out-gained the Cavaliers 413-313, with the 100-yard difference coming through the air. Both teams ran for 105 yards. Anderson was led by Will Carter with seven tackles. Eavenson, who had four tackles and sack, forced a fumble and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds. Zay Williams had five receptions for 92 yards for Anderson, including a 21-yard touchdown. Rob Sanders (two yards), Darron Parry (four yards) and Lennix Valarie (43) also had touchdown receptions. Parr Folsom added a 3-yard run for a touchdown. Jalen Pickens paced UVA Wise with seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. UVA Wise will host its third straight home game next Saturday against Carson-Newman.
