Tourism in Johnson City, Washington Co. $388.9 million in visitor spending for 2025

Recent data from Tourism Economics and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development shows that visitors to Johnson City/Washington County generated more than $388 million in spending in 2025.The amount represents an almost 12% increase over 2024, according to the press release from Visit Johnson City. It outpaces the statewide growth rate of 2.7%."Tourism in Johnson City/Washington County continues to be a powerful driver of growth and opportunity for our community," said Brenda Whitson, executive director of Visit Johnson City, in the release. "Generating nearly $389 million in visitor spending in 2025, with an 11.7% increase over the previous year, is a significant accomplishment. These results reflect the strength and appeal of Johnson City/Washington County as a destination and the continued impact that tourism has on our local businesses, workforce and economy."The press release also states Washington County is part of Tennessee's Northeast tourism region, where visitor spending reached $1 billion in 2025, up 8.9% over 2024 and up 35.8% since 2018.According to the press release, other information about visitor spending in Washington County during 2025 includes: ● Direct visitor spending in Washington County generated more than $25.1 million in state tax revenue and more than $14.2 million in local tax revenue. ● Every day, visitors spend more than $1 million on lodging, retail, transportation, recreation and dining throughout Washington County. ● Johnson City/Washington County had 1.1 million visitors in 2025 with more than 750,000 overnight visitors. ● If it were not for state and local taxes generated by tourism, each household in Washington County would pay $695 more in state and local taxes. ● Visitor-paid taxes support public education and other critical services across Tennessee. ● Washington County ranked No. 11 among the 95 counties in Tennessee based on visitor spending.
