JCPD expects to finish Gray shooting investigation next week

Police expect to finish their investigation into a fatal shooting in Gray in the coming days, a Johnson City spokesperson said Friday. More than a week after the incident, Johnson City Police Department has not released the name of a suspect and no charges have been filed. On Monday, police identified 24-year-old Dalton Spaulding, of Jonesborough as the man killed in the shooting. "Investigators are taking the time necessary to ensure all aspects of the case are fully examined before the investigation is finalized," JCPD spokesperson Shira Evans said in an email to the Johnson City Press Friday. "Once the investigation is finalized, which is currently expected to happen next week, the case file will be provided to District Attorney General Steve Finney's office for review and consideration of any potential charges." Police found Spaulding dead when they arrived to the scene the morning of Aug. 14 in the parking lot at 401 Roy Martin Road. Investigators said later that day the incident appears to have stemmed from an argument between Spaulding and another over a handicap parking space, during which the 24-year-old was shot. During a media briefing, the lead investigator on the case said it was an isolated event and there's believed to be no danger to the public. The day of the incident, JCPD did take a person of interest into custody for questioning when officers arrived at the scene. The city did not provide any more information about the person of interest or the investigation. The incident caused Gray Elementary School to be placed on lockdown for about 20 minutes following the shooting.
