Three women, four Democrats elected to Washington County Commission reach historical milestone

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TENN. — Three women and three Democrats have made a historical milestone for the Washington County Commission following the recent county general election, according to unofficial results. The Washington County Commission has never had three women, or more, elected to hold a seat, Washington County Administrator of Elections Chuck Vest said. Additionally, for the first time in at least 26 years, four Democrats will hold seats on the county commission following the flipping of three seats. The Washington County Election Commission Office's readily available records go back to 2000, Vest said. "This is a historic result, and what matters just as much is how it happened," Washington County Democratic Party Chair Sylvain Bruni said. "Over the past several years, we have done the hard work of building community power and infrastructure, recruiting strong candidates, supporting volunteers, and engaging voters across Washington County." He added, "there is something especially meaningful about seeing these women break through a political system long dominated by the same networks, the same insiders, and significant outside PAC money. Voters showed that grassroots organizing and people power can still win." Bruni said the results of this election change what people believe is possible in local governments. "Candidates who might once have thought, 'Someone like me can't win here,' now have proof that they can," he said. "Young people and women can look at the county commission and see more people who reflect their communities and experiences." The flipping of three seats also sends a message about how the future of politics is changing, he said. "The old model of relying on party labels, insider networks, or outside money is losing its grip," Bruni said. "Voters want leaders who show up, listen and take their concerns seriously." Based on the determination of the county legislative body concerning the county commission tied race in District 13, another Democratic woman could flip a fourth seat. Breaking down the votes Unofficial election result statistics show 72% of voters in Washington County voted for Republican candidates with 16,158 Republican votes cast out of the 22,145 total votes. "This August election shows the same historical patterns as in past elections in most districts but does illustrate a sharp increase in Democratic voters and crossover voters in the districts impacted by the school board district 1 contest," Vest said in an email statement. He added the Washington County School Board District 1 race had the "greatest" influence on District 9 through District 13. In those five districts alone 2,251 of the votes were Democratic making up 39% of the total party votes. Vest said this election saw an increase of voters under the age of 50 and a "good little bump in the ones under 25 in this election." The largest increase in younger voters came from the Democratic party, Vest said. Statistics show 39% ballots requested from registered voters between the ages of 26 and 50 and 8% between the ages of 18 and 25. Majority of Democratic voters — 53% — were 50 years of age or older. He added the Republican party had a slight increase in younger voters. Statistics show 17% ballots requested from registered voters between the ages of 26 and 50 and 3% between the ages of 18 and 25. Majority of Republican voters — 80% — were 50 years of age or older. More than 60% of women made up the Democratic votes casted in each precinct, on average, with only 37% of men voting Democratic, according to unofficial election results. Concerning the Republican votes, 51% of women voted for Republican candidates and 49% of men. While registered voters in the state do not affiliate with a political party when registering to vote, statistics show Tennessee residents are increasingly voting Democratic. During the early voting period alone, Democratic ballots requested for the state and federal primary elections increased 45.18% since 2022 across the state and 248% in Washington County, according to the Tennessee Secretary of State website.
