Faith fueling Happy Valley's Parker into senior season

ELIZABETHTON — Happy Valley standout senior Lane Parker's life changed over one week last fall. But the moment wasn't a game or a practice. One week in the fall, the Warriors football program had a team church outing, where 11 players made a proclamation of faith. Parker was one of those 11. "I haven't been the same since," he said. "Jesus has played such a big role on this team and on me personally. I had one of the best games of my career the week after I got baptized. It's no coincidence. If you give all to Him, He will glorify you so He can be glorified." The role of his faith has only grown, as it inspired the design for Parker's cleats for the season. Featuring a base color of white, verses Philippians 4:13 and John 3:16 adorn the sides of the shoes with both crosses and Happy Valley insignia featured prominently as well. The faith of Parker and others on the Warriors team has helped them throughout the course of the offseason. Happy Valley saw the passing of longtime assistant coach Randy Ferrell back on July 23. He had been with the program the past 16 years and was a mainstay in the Northeast Tennessee coaching community for decades more. "He had a really big impact on us," Parker said. "This would have been our fourth year with him. Me and a couple of others were a part of that quarterback group. We love Coach Ferrell. He will always be in our hearts. We'll always play for him. That's a big thing this year is we're playing for Coach Ferrell. Not just for Happy Valley, but for Coach Ferrell, too." Coming into this season, Parker has been part of a three-man quarterback competition with fellow senior Artee Bahn and sophomore Greyson Ensor. He enters the year after being one of the Warrior's top returning ball carriers. In a dozen games last year, Parker ran the ball 65 times for 910 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 84 yards, both touchdowns, went 2-for-2 for 65 yards passing, and had two punt return touchdowns. How exactly the senior stays involved in the offense in 2026 is still to be determined, but he says he's open to whatever is needed. "I don't really care where I play," Parker said. "I just want to win games. At the end of the day, that's all it's about. Winning games and I want to get that ring." A state championship ring to be exact. The Warriors were one of the top teams in Class 2A last year, posting a perfect 10-0 regular season after averaging 47.8 points per game and allowing just 6.9 points per night in the 10 games. They then handled Tellico Plains before falling in a heartbreaker to Bledsoe County in the second round. Happy Valley scored a touchdown in the closing moments to get within 21-20 and opted to go for two, but fell six inches short of what would have been the win. The defeat has been a rallying cry for Parker and the rest of the veterans. "We've talked about it all year, 'six inches,'" he said. "That's all we needed. Everyday at practice, that's all we talk about. 'What are we going to do to get those six inches?' It's been a big motivator for all the returners, especially the seniors. We're looking forward to getting those six inches this year and making it further in the playoffs."
