Get to know... Ryder Casey

Ryder Casey is a young musician from Erwin who has spent the last few years making waves and building a following throughout the region. After spending time covering his idols and learning how to play live, he is now writing and recording his own songs, with an EP release last year and more recordings in the works. Casey is reverential to the history of his chosen genre, a mix or classic bluegrass and country sounds with a few rough edges and Southern rock thrown in for good measure - but that doesn't mean he isn't willing to take chances as he goes forward. He has surrounded himself with good musicians and his live shows seem more mature and polished than those of other musicians his age, choosing songs that fit his musical style as well as his personality. Ryder wants to make a living playing music and he's putting in the work, playing festivals and shows that inch him closer to his goal and continuing to hone his songwriting skills and build on his current list of collaborators. He seems to be doing things right and his name keeps getting mentioned in growing circles, so you might want to catch a show before gets away from us. Before you do, take a few moments and get to know Ryder Casey. When did you decide music was going to be a big part of your life, and how did you first get involved? "My dad took me to a Willie Nelson concert for my 17th birthday and that was the moment I knew music was what I wanted to do. Before that, my dad taught me guitar when I was young and I even played in my second-grade talent show where I sang 'Folsom Prison Blues.' Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember." Is your current project a first, or have you been involved in other things? "I've been involved in a lot of different styles over the years. I started out playing bluegrass, then moved into Southern rock, while still keeping country and bluegrass influences in the mix. Every step along the way has helped shape the sound I'm creating today." What is it about music that makes you want to perform or be involved? "There's just something special about being on stage. For a little while, all the stress and worries disappear, and it's just you, the music, and the crowd. It's something I genuinely love doing." How would you describe your music (band/project)? "I'd describe my music as a blend of neo-traditional country and Southern rock with a touch of bluegrass. If I had to compare it to someone, I'd say it falls somewhere in the vein of Charlie Daniels." Is this something you see yourself doing as a career? "Absolutely. Music is what I want to do for a living. Right now, I'm focused on growing my audience, learning the social media side of things and getting more original songs out there." What are your other interests? Do you have any surprise talents or hobbies? "Outside of music, I enjoy fishing, foraging for wild mushrooms and spending time outdoors. Anything that gets me out in nature is something I enjoy." Who are your influences/favorites (worldwide and local)? "Some of my biggest influences are Charlie Daniels, the Allman Brothers Band, and Tony Rice. They've all had a major impact on the way I play and approach music." If you could tell people one thing they should know about you, what would it be? "I'm a laid-back country boy who loves good music, the outdoors and connecting with people through songs."
