Across the country, research continues to highlight the positive impact sports participation has on girls both physically and mentally. From improved health and reduced stress to increased self-esteem and leadership development, sports provide benefits that extend far beyond the playing field. Unfortunately, many girls step away from sports during their middle and high school years. According to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), girls leave sports at higher rates than boys due to barriers such as limited opportunities, lack of female role models, confidence issues, cost and competing responsibilities. Recreation departments are faced with having to cancel, allow co-ed play or modify sports leagues just to keep the opportunity available for girls to play.Research from the Women's Sports Foundation also found that girls are less likely than boys to currently participate in sports and are more likely to have never played at all. Efforts are underway at Kingsport Parks and Recreation to introduce an all-girls flag football league, providing a new opportunity for girls to experience one of the nation's fastest-growing sports. Studies show that girls involved in athletics often experience stronger mental health, better academic performance and increased social connection. Participation also helps develop life skills such as teamwork, resilience, communication and leadership that continue into adulthood. One of the most effective ways communities can help girls remain active is by creating welcoming and encouraging programs and spaces. Experts say girls are more likely to continue participating when programs focus on fun, inclusion, skill development and positive experiences rather than pressure. Access to affordable recreation programs, mentorship opportunities and supportive coaches can also make a lasting difference. That is why Kingsport Parks and Recreation continues working to expand opportunities specifically designed to help girls participate, compete and grow through recreation. Efforts are underway to introduce an all-girls flag football league, providing a new opportunity for girls to experience one of the nation's fastest-growing sports. The recreation department has partnered with local nonprofit agencies such as Greater Kingsport Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc. to host skills and drills sessions by going to where the girls are in the community. When girls are encouraged to play, communities benefit as well. Healthier lifestyles, stronger confidence and future leadership opportunities can all begin by simply giving girls the opportunity to get in the game. Girls' sports camps and clinics also continue to provide opportunities for young athletes to learn fundamentals, build confidence and discover a love for sports in a supportive environment. These programs represent more than just sports opportunities. They help create a sense of belonging, empowerment and community connection for girls of all ages. Parks and recreation departments often serve as an entry point into athletics for children who may not have access to travel teams or school-based sports programs. NRPA reports that local parks and recreation agencies are among the nation's leading providers of youth sports and play a critical role in offering affordable and accessible opportunities for participation. When girls are encouraged to play, communities benefit as well. Healthier lifestyles, stronger confidence and future leadership opportunities can all begin by simply giving girls the opportunity to get in the game.
