A look at Johnson City Parks and Rec's summer camps, programming

Johnson City Parks and Recreation offers several activities and camps for families and kids of all ages. While many summer camps have wrapped up their registration period, here's a rundown of the camps that still have spots available and upcoming programs that bring fun for the whole family. Summer camps still open for registration Langston Health Care Awareness Camp This week-long camp is designed for rising 7th and 8th grade students. Throughout the week, campers will learn about career opportunities in healthcare through games, puzzles and interactions with current practicing professional nurses. For five hours a day for five days, campers will participate in activities that increase their awareness of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be a CNA/LPN in hopes to guide them in career interests. When: July 13-17, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Who: Rising 7th and 8th graders Where: Langston Centre, 315 Elm St. Cost: $50 Registration: Register online at myjcparks.org. Children have fun in the sprinklers at the Kids Zone at a previous Lakeside Concert Series event. CONTRIBUTED/CITY OF JOHNSON CITY Sprouts All Out Camp At this camp, preschoolers will explore a variety of learning experiences through arts, crafts, games and storytelling. Each week of camp features a new theme — from super heroes, to the wild west to pirates and mermaids. There will be no camp the week of June 29 to July 3. When: June 1-July 31, 9 a.m. to noon Who: Ages 3-5 Where: Kiwanis Recreation Center, 821 W. Market St. Cost: $50 for residents, $60 for non-residents Registration: Register online at myjcparks.org. Therapeutic Recreation Camp This camp is a structured, supervised program with traditional camp activities (swimming, crafts and games) specifically designed for individuals with disabilities, focusing on each camper's unique strengths and abilities. When: 9 a.m. to noon on July 6-10; July 13-17; July 20-24 Who: Ages 16-30 Where: Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St. Cost: $50 for residents, $60 for non-residents Registration: Register online at myjcparks.org or call 423-461-4851 Summer programming After you've finished signing up for summer camp, take a closer look at your calendar to see if any of the following free, family-friendly events fit in your schedule. CONTRIBUTED/CITY OF JOHNSON CITY Lakeside Concert Series The Lakeside Concert Series is an annual event put on by Johnson City Parks and Recreation that offers free, family-friendly live music every Thursday in June. While the Lakeside concerts have already kicked off, here's the artist lineup for the rest of the month-long series. June 18 — From the Edge June 25 — The Legacy Motown Revue The concerts will take place on these dates from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Winged Deer Park's Goulding Amphitheatre, 199 Carroll Creek Rd. Concerts are free and open to all ages and will feature a Kids Zone with games and giveaways, and food trucks. Party in the Park Looking further ahead in July, Johnson City Parks and Recreation is putting on another whole month of fun events across the city. After a July 4 celebration, a party for all ages will be held each Thursday at a different Johnson City park. Here's the lineup: July 4 — Independence Day Celebration Kid Zone at Pete Zannis Tennis Complex, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 9 — Rotary Park, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 16 — Powell Square Park, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 23 — Carver Park, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 30 — Legion Street Pool (free swim), 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
