Community rallies behind snoball shop worker hurt in crash

One of the victims of a DUI-related car crash in downtown Johnson City has had more than $9,000 raised to aid in her recovery as of Monday afternoon. An employee of Sam's Snoball Paradise, Macy Street, was one of four individuals hit by a 2021 Ford Explorer on Saturday morning, which resulted in one fatality. According to her GoFundMe's page, the injuries she received will leave her bedridden "for an extended period of time." The GoFundMe is organized by Samatha Lopez, who is the owner of Sam's Snoball Shop. A Saturday post on the business's Facebook page commends Street's presence with customers and encourages people to donate to her recovery fund. "If you ever walked into our shop and got the privilege to be greeted by this sweet face you know she instantly put a smile on yours," the post states. Additionally, the GoFundMe states the funds will help counteract Street's unavailability to work during her recovery and her medical expenses as she heals. "While Macy focuses on healing, she's unable to work and is facing mounting medical bills (no health insurance) and living expenses," the page states. "The financial strain of being hospitalized and out of work is overwhelming, and she needs support to cover essentials like medical care and living expenses. Every dollar raised will help ease Macy's worries so she can concentrate on getting better. As of Monday afternoon, Street's GoFundMe has raised just over $9,900, approaching the page's goal of $14,000. The driver of the vehicle, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol, is 36-year-old Steven Kotsonis, who was driving west on West Market Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday when he crossed into the intersection, entered the eastbound lane, lost control of his vehicle and struck four people, a city lamp and a sign. The other three individuals hit by the vehicle were Ethan Saxon, Riley Gowan and Toby Cornett. The THP reported Cornett died from fatal injuries sustained in the crash. Kotsonis was reportedly charged with the following: Violation of implied consent law (Refusal of DUI blood test) Reckless endangerment Reckless driving Vehicular assault (three counts) Vehicular homicide Leaving the scene of an accident DUI Failure to exercise due care
