"Salute to Veterans" returns to StoryTown Radio for Memorial Day

As Memorial Day approaches, StoryTown Radio prepares up for its yearly "Salute to Veterans" show at the McKinney Center. McKinney Center Program Manager and overseer of the StoryTown Radio show, Anne Mason said that while each StoryTown show is special, this one is a little different. "It is the only theme we do every year because there are so many veterans in our area and their stories need to be heard," Mason said. "They are friends and neighbors and we often time don't know what they've done and what they've been through." StoryTown Radio runs throughout the year, with one show each month. Stories told include topics from notable locals to important historical events to highlighting the special people and happenings of Jonesborough and the surrounding area. The show, which takes place on May 25, includes stories of a few local veterans as they traversed the armed services and their experiences while serving across a multitude of eras. Sometimes, the veterans and their friends and families are in attendance and get to hear and see their story play out right in front of them, something Mason says is very special to be a part of. "It's always an honor to share their (veterans) stories, especially when they themselves or their families are in the audience," said Mason. "Sometimes it's the family's first time hearing the story because their loved one hadn't talked to them about it." For the veterans to take a chance and be vulnerable and open up to share their stories with the radio show and the archives is special. Hearing these stories directly from the source and then being able to tell that story of courage and sacrifice in such a unique way is another thing Mason said is imperative. "It's important to know the sacrifices that have been made by our veterans so that we can continue to experience the freedoms we have," Mason added. "It's also important to know all the ways you can serve your country." This year's show will also feature a performance by the Jonesborough Novelty Band. For any veterans who attend the Memorial Day event in Jonesborough earlier in the day, tickets to the show are available for free.
