Jonesborough BMA to have final reading of data municipal code

The Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen will have the second and final reading to consider approval of a municipal code for data centers and cryptocurrency at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. The meeting is set to take place at 6 p.m. in Jonesborough Town Hall, located at 123 Boone St. Here are some highlights from the meeting's agenda. Municipal Code for Data Centers/Cryptocurrency The second and final reading of the ordinance amends the Jonesborough Municipal Code Title 11 (Planning and Zoning), Chapter 5 (General Privisions related to Zoning) by defining data center/cryptocurrency mining, adding parking standards for those uses, provides the applicant must submit an application outlining regulations and the application must be approved by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. Other important criteria regarding the application includes yard, location, and separation distances; noise performance standards, water usage and wastewater sustainability, electrical demand and grid impact, and annual reporting. The agenda also states the purpose of regulating data centers is because they are "high-impact, infrastructure-intensive facilities that can significantly affect land use, utilities and neighborhoods." The first reading of the municipal code amendment was approved at the March 16 meeting and recommended for approval by the Jonesborough Planning Commission at their April 21 board meeting. Municipal Code Sewer Use and Wastewater Treatment A second and final reading will also be considered for amending Municipal Code Title 13, Chapter 2, for the town's Sewer Use and Wastewater Treatment in its entirety. The first reading of the ordinance was approved at the April 13 meeting. The agenda states if approved, the changing of the municipal code will allow Jonesborough to develop local limits without requiring future modification to the Sewer Use Ordinance, which will reduce the number of public notices published and shorten the overall implementation time frame during future review processes.
