Races, yoga, health fairs for May

A variety of hikes, runs and other health events in May will offer opportunities to exercise in the sun and explore other aspects of wellness. Here's just a sample of what's on the calendar for the upcoming month. JOHNSON CITY AREA May Full Moon Hike Friday, May 1 from 10-11:59 p.m. at 501 Rocky Fork Road, Flag Pond This exclusive after-hours moderate hike will take participants up to White Oak Flats overlook to observe the Full Moon along the Rocky Fork Valley and other mountain peaks. Healthy Kids Running Series Sunday, May 3 and Sunday, May 10 at Citian Park, 1000 N. Broadway St. This 5-week running program for children in preschool through eighth grade offers "age-appropriate running events" like dashes and runs a mile and under. Kids earn points for each race completed based on their finish. Mother's Day Weekend Hike Saturday, May 9 at Rocky Fork State Pond, Flag Pond This hike will treat mothers to spring wildflowers, cascades and newly sprouted greenery. The group will hike three miles in total on the Rocky Fork and Flink Creek trails. The Wholeness Expo Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Community Center This free holistic wellness expo will focus on the interconnectedness of body, mind and spirit. Roan Mountain events Roan Mountain State Park will have multiple events throughout May, including a coffee and hike with a ranger (May 23) and a field naturalist summer series. KINGSPORT AREA Girls on the Run Northeast Tennessee 5K Friday, May 1 at Whitetop Creek Park in Bristol, Tennessee Pre-event celebration begins at 6 p.m., race waves start at 7 p.m. This 5K run from Girls on the Run encourages participants to recognize their inner strength and increase their level of physical activity. This year's run will implement a "wave" start, according to the organization website. Cinco de Mayo Taco Run from the State of Franklin Track Club Tuesday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at Warriors Path State Park, Kingsport This SFTC monthly run adds a twist for participants. The 2.5 mile challenge equates to four loops around Duck Island — but runners are required to eat a taco at the start of each loop. More information can be found at runtricities.org. Walk for Wellness Health Expo Saturday, May 7 at the Kingsport Farmer's Market This health expo will offer more than 40 vendors, a medical and dental clinic, pediatric screenings and children events. Mike Lovelace Memorial Mile from the State of Franklin Track Club Tuesday, May 12 at Warriors Path State Park, Kingsport This one-mile run is offered for multiple age groups and qualifies for the Tennessee State Records. Run the Streets 10k and 5k presented by Ballad Health Saturday, May 16 at 400 Clinchfield St., Kingsport The 10K run/walk starts at 9 a.m., the 5K run/walk starts at 10:30 a.m. Previously known as the Racks by the Tracks 10K and 5K, these courses are "known as the flattest in the region," according to a press release. Participants that run both races can become an "Urban Legend" and receive a special gift. Registration can be found at HealthyKingsport.org. Bays Mountain paddles, yoga Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium will have multiple events for evening paddles (May 5, 19), kayak stargazing (May 7, 12, 14) and planetarium or barge yoga (May 9, 23).
