Fill a bag for $5: JCPL used book sale set for Saturday, Sunday

The Friends of the Johnson City Public Library is holding a used book sale this weekend with a variety of reads available for purchase that fit everyone's interests. The sales will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. in the library's Jones Meeting Center and Polly Peterson Room, according to a JCPL press release. The sale features thousands of gently-used items donated by people in the community. All the proceeds from the Friends' biannual book sales go directly back into funding library events, collections and projects, according to the release. Friends of the Library President Julia Swanson said in the release that these sales are the organization's main fundraiser. "We have a very supportive community who come to our sales and go home not only with interesting books to read, but also with a smile knowing they have helped support their wonderful library," Swanson said. The money raised directly funds popular library initiatives, such as the Scholastic Book Fair book bucks kids earn during Summer Reading. "We also provide for the streaming service, Hoopla Digital and the library's collection of Vox Books," Swanson said. "And in addition to events we support, the Friends fund projects like the restoration of equipment in the Jones Meeting Center." The Friends of the Library sales also benefit the community by allowing residents to donate books they no longer need, Swanson said in the release. The Friends collect sort and store all donated books until they're purchased at book sales. "It is one of those wonderful situations where everyone benefits," Swanson said. Paperbacks are priced at $1 and hardback are priced at $3. Children's picture books will be two for $1 and children's chapter books are $1 each. CDs and DVDs are $1 each. People can also purchase a library tote bag full of books for $25, according to the release. At the Sunday sale, people can fill any size bag for $5, according to the release. Bags will be provided for those who need them, but people are encouraged to bring their own if possible. The Friends of the Johnson City Public Library is an organization that supports and promotes the public library.
