Washington County bus driver dismissed over safety concerns

A Washington County Schools bus driver has been terminated after students reported unsafe driving on a recent route. Director of Schools Jerry Boyd confirmed Tuesday that April Roberts, the driver of Bus 20 serving Grandview Elementary School and David Crockett High School, was dismissed following a district investigation. Parents were notified of the decision Friday. Boyd said students brought forward concerns about the driving, prompting a review that led to Roberts' termination. "Washington County Schools takes all reports involving student safety seriously, including those related to student transportation," Boyd said. "After concerns were reported regarding unsafe driving, the district conducted a prompt and thorough investigation. "Based on the findings of that review, the decision was made to terminate the driver's employment," he said. Boyd said personnel rules limit what the district can publicly share but said that student safety remains the top priority. "Personnel matters are confidential, and the district is limited in what it can share publicly regarding individual employees," he said. "However, we want to assure our families and community that student safety is our highest priority. When concerns are raised, they are reviewed carefully and appropriate action is taken when expectations are not met." He said the district maintains multiple safety measures to address concerns quickly. "In addition to taking action in this case, we have structured safeguards in place, including required training, regular oversight and clear reporting procedures," he said. "When concerns are brought forward, they are reviewed promptly and addressed appropriately. Our commitment is and will remain to ensure every student is transported safely, every day." Boyd also expressed appreciation for those who came forward with concerns. "We sincerely appreciate all who report concerns (especially the students in this case), as that allows us to respond appropriately and maintain a safe environment for all students," he added. In a joint message to parents and guardians of Bus 20 riders, principals from Grandview Elementary and David Crockett High School said they were proud of the students who reported the concerns. "I am writing to share that we are incredibly proud of our students," the statement said. "Several students demonstrated great leadership and responsibility by speaking up about concerns regarding their bus ride this morning." The statement reiterated that student safety is the district's highest priority and said immediate action was taken following the investigation. "WCS will maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism for all our bus drivers," the statement said. "Unsafe driving habits will not be tolerated."
