ROUNDUP: 'Toppers hold off Jefferson County to earn Tribe Classic win

JOHNSON CITY — Following a tough showing against Greeneville on Wednesday, Science Hill head coach Ryan Edwards had one message for his team ahead of Thursday's game: compete. "The wins and the losses aren't big right now, it's the learning how to compete," Edwards said. "That's all I care about. That's what we addressed yesterday. Talking about representing our community better. Showing up every day and competing. We have not been doing that. 'We don't deserve to wear these uniforms right now,' is what I told them yesterday. I felt, today, they wore the uniform the way Science Hill expects." The Hilltoppers picked up a 5-4 victory over Jefferson County as a result. The Patriots struck first in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly, with Sean Young scoring from third. But the 'Toppers came back to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bryson Carver hit an RBI single before Owen Lewis picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly of his own. In the next frame, the middle of the Science Hill order gave the hosts much-needed insurance. First, Nate Stoots roped a run-scoring single into left field. Then, Darren Hill mashed a ball into center for a two-run triple where he was cut down at home trying to turn it into a home run. But the Patriots weren't done yet, scoring three runs in the sixth inning and getting the game-tying run into scoring position in the seventh. However, Luke Edwards closed the door for the win. Dobyns-Bennett 10, Eastside (Va.) 0 KINGSPORT — Jaylen Thomas had a four-RBI game out of the eighth spot in the order to lead the Indians to victory. Cam Hayworth doubled and Baker Correll drove in a pair of runs. Dalton Shelton tossed a complete game, scattering three hits and striking out four while not allowing a free pass. West Ridge 16, Volunteer 9 BLOUNTVILLE — Isaac McGee went a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI for the Wolves. Ty Malak, Braelyn Vance, and Jaxson Bolling all also had multiple hits, with Vance driving in a pair of RBI. Brock Mowell drove in four runs and Gavin Hickernell went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in for the Falcons. Daniel Boone 8, Morristown East 0 MOSHEIM — T.J. Leonard tossed a no-hitter for the Trailblazers. He only allowed two walks and struck out nine on 93 pitches. He also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Jack Ridley doubled twice and Braden Gore also had a two-hit game. Sullivan East 12, Unaka 2 ELIZABETHTON — Peyton Lingerfelt homered twice and drove in four RBI out of the leadoff spot for the Patriots. T.K. Crowder, Quinton Thompson, Braylen Mullins, and Nathan Hodge all also had multiple hits. Laken Barnett doubled home a run for the Rangers. Jefferson County 9, Cherokee 0 JOHNSON CITY — Caleb Franklin threw a no-hitter for the Patriots, allowing just one walk and one hit-by pitch. Vanderbilt pitching commit Brody Carr hit a home run as part of a seven-run sixth inning. Gatlinburg-Pittman 9, Happy Valley 6 ELIZABETHTON — Easton Gauff and Hayden Shultz both went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Highlanders. Ryan Cutshaw and Colt Hammonds both drove in a pair of RBI. Lane Parker doubled as both he and Greg Visser drove in two runs apiece for the Warriors. Cloudland 4, Bethel Christian (N.C.) 3 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Bo Wilson hit a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Highlangers their first win of the year. Walker Gouge pitched a strong 3 ⅔ innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one unearned run and a walk to go with seven strikeouts. Dylan Smith had the Crusaders' lone hit. Johnson County 14, Tri-Cities Christian 0 (Game 1) MOUNTAIN CITY — Sawyer Marshall drove in three RBI to lead a balanced Longhorn offense to open the doubleheader. Carson Jennings, Gavin Mahala, and Chris Wilson all accounted for two runs driven in, apiece. Josh Johnson had the Eagles' lone hit of game one. Johnson County 8, Tri-Cities Christian 3 (Game 2) MOUNTAIN CITY — The top three hitters in the Longhorn order: Kaden Blevins, Carson Jennings, and Avery Jones, combined for six hits, four runs scored, and three RBI. Brock Jones scored a pair of runs and also didn't allow a run in 1 ⅓ innings out of the bullpen, striking out three. Coen Kester picked up a pair of RBI for the Eagles Cornerstone 13, Twin Springs 9 ABINGDON — Drew Roop, Noah Witler, and Zach McNulty all had two hits for the Lions. Clay Ross doubled twice and scored a pair of runs for the Titans. SOFTBALL Dobyns-Bennett 7, Morristown West 1 KINGSPORT — Allie McConnelee went 3-for-4 with three RBI while also allowing just two hits in the circle for the Lady Indians. Riley McMillan had a pair of hits and scored three runs and Evie Porter added a two-hit, two-RBI game. Kaylynn Milton hit a solo home run in the fourth for the Lady Trojans. David Crockett 7, Tennessee High 0 JONESBOROUGH — Bella Blanton went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead the Lady Pioneer offense. Lacey Whitaker drove in a pair of runs and Madelyn Dulaney scattered two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in the circle. Addie Wilhoit and Kelsie Hughes accounted for the two Lady Viking hits. Elizabethton 16, Hampton 7 HAMPTON — Betsy opened the affair on fire at the plate, posting 12 runs in the first inning of play. Sadie Williams drove in four RBI and Kaitlyn Gryder both doubled twice and struck out five in just two innings of work. Both Lillian Andrews and Hadley Vines went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Lady Bulldogs, while Andrews also accounted for two RBI. Cloudland 7, South Greene 6 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Savannah McCoury went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Highlanders. Eowyn McCoury and Reagan Turbyfill both had two-hit games as well for Cloudland, who went for six runs in the fifth. Hailey Williamson drove in three runs on two hits for the Lady Rebels. Unaka 12, University High 4 ELIZABETHTON — The Lady Rangers erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away from UH. Devalynn Harter and Mollie Buckles both doubled twice and Kacie Bare and Kimberly Proffitt combined for 11 strikeouts in the circle. Madison Luck doubled as both she and Alex Boynewicz had two hits each for the Lady Bucs. Happy Valley 16, Tri-Cities Christian 3 BLOUNTVILLE — Every Lady Warrior batter had at least one hit and eight of them had multiple hits as the visitors pounded out 21 hits. Alex Moore drove in four runs and had three hits. Trinity Bowers, Addison Moore, and Mackenzie Skeans also had three-hit nights. Cherokee 3, Grainger 0 RUTLEDGE — Destanee Davis and Grace Lincoln both had two hits and scored a run for the Lady Grizzlies. Shylo Williford tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters. Shelby Helton got saddled with a tough-luck loss, only allowing four hits and one earned run. Jaylyn Cutshall had the Lady Chiefs' only hit. Lakeway Christian 12, Providence Academy 0 JOHNSON CITY — Ashley Blackburn tossed a no-hitter for the Lady Lions, surrendering just two walks with eight strikeouts. Birdie Russell left the yard for the visitors and McKinley Grubb went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Rye Cove 7, J.I. Burton 1 NORTON — Allison Akers struck out seven and scattered five hits while allowing an unearned run for the Lady Eagles. Morgan Edwards drove in three RBI on two singles as Rye Cove scored seven runs on just three hits. Makayla McCurdy doubled and scored a run for the Lady Raiders. Tiny Day Tournament Greeneville 8, Chuckey-Doak 0 GREENEVILLE — Brynlee Jones homered as part of a 2-for-3 game with three RBI for the Lady Greene Devils. Brylee Tullock also had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot as every player in the lineup reached base. Jamie Jackson allowed just two hits in five innings in the circle for Greeneville. North Greene 7, Sullivan East 5 GREENEVILLE — Eva Leonard drove in four RBI and Kinlea Eastep scored three runs for the Lady Huskies. Both Audrey Easley and Piper Smith went a perfect 3-for-3 in the Lady Patriot batting order, with Smith homering. Smith also pitched for East and only allowed two earned runs. West Ridge 12, Chuckey-Doak 0 GREENEVILLE — Lacey Fugate went 3-for-3 with five RBI, including a two-run home run, for the Lady Wolves. Miranda Henley was dominant in three innings of work, going nine-up, nine-down and recording eight strikeouts. Madisyn Miller and Paylin Shelton had the Lady Black Knights' two hits. North Greene 2, Daniel Boone 2 GREENEVILLE — Lilly Hilton hit a solo home run as part of a two-hit game as the Lady Trailblazers played to a time-limit tie after eight innings. Emmi Croley tossed four innings without issuing a walk out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits and a run. Kinlea Eastep went 2-for-4 from the top of the order for the Lady Huskies. BOYS SOCCER Unicoi County 4, Cherokee 2 ROGERSVILLE — McKinley Norris scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Blue Devils. Jonas Dorton and Oscar Jimenez also found the back of the net in the victory. Nehemiah Campbell and Jared Mendoza both picked up helpers as well. Benny Acevedo made a pair of saves for Unicoi County. Science Hill 5, David Crockett 0 JOHNSON CITY — Tommy Faleke assisted on a Jackson Faddis goal in the 28th minute before scoring himself in the 31st minute. Nahum Tadessee had the assist. In the second half, Dylan Trull scored in the 56th minute, Brayden Harris netted a goal in the 58th, and Andy Salas found the back of the net in the 68th. Salas assisted on the other two second-half goals. Calvin Dennis made 11 saves for the Pioneers. Dobyns-Bennett 2, West Ridge 0 BLOUNTVILLE — Colin Steach and Abijah Powers accounted for the two Indian goals. Duncan Worley and Maxx Cardoza recorded assists. Brennan Rowe stopped both shots he faced for D-B while Wolves goalie Asher Hubble made 16 saves. Tennessee High 3, Daniel Boone 1 BRISTOL, Tenn. — Brodyn Murphy scored twice and Jackson Ferrell added another goal for the Vikings. Holden Lester had an assist. John S. Battle (Va.) 4, Sullivan East 2 BLUFF CITY — Nolan Woolwine-Senter and Eli Bowery each scored a goal in defeat for the Patriots. Isiah Valencia recorded an assist. Will Phillips made a pair of saves and Zack Pearson stopped three shots in net.
