Woodland Elementary counts down to Artemis II splashdown

A historic moon mission is unfolding thousands of miles away, but in one classroom, it feels close enough to touch. As NASA Artemis II nears its return to Earth, a first grade classroom at Woodland Elementary school is turning a global milestone into a hands-on lesson in curiosity and discovery. The mission, which has carried astronauts around the moon, is set to conclude with a splashdown of the Orion capsule in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego the evening of April 10. The landing marks a key step in NASA's effort to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time in decades. Inside Melissa Gavin's first grade classroom, the focus is less on logistics and more on wonder, where students have been watching the online stream of the mission. "I wanted my students to experience real-world science as it was happening," Gavin said. "The Artemis II mission connected to what we have learned about the sky, the moon and how people explore space. Earth and Space Sciences are part of the Tennessee Science Standards, so it made science feel exciting and real for them." As students followed the mission, Gavin introduced big ideas in small, approachable ways — breaking down topics like gravity, the moon and space travel into concepts her students could grasp. "I break the topic into small, simple ideas and connect it to things students already know," she said. "We focus on one concept at a time, like the moon, earth, gravity, or how astronauts travel." Gavin said her students quickly realized they were witnessing something historic. "They were really excited when I explained this was history in the making," she said. "Never had astronauts traveled around the moon. This was a moment I was hoping they would remember as adults." That excitement has translated into a steady stream of questions — both practical and philosophical for students. "Why is this mission so important?" "How do astronauts land safely in the ocean?" "Why do they land in water instead of on land?" "Will the astronauts be scared?" "How do they get out of the spacecraft?" Gavin said, listing the questions her students have asked. Gavin said that curiosity and those questions are exactly the point. "These moments help students see that science is real and happening right now," she said. "It builds curiosity and encourages them to ask questions, which is a big part of science. It also helps them start thinking about how people use science to explore." She said the lesson became even more meaningful because of a personal connection in the classroom. "Mrs. Kelly Lewis, our classroom assistant, has a close connection to astronaut Victor Glover and his family," Gavin said. "It made it even more exciting and personal." When asked what it might feel like to travel to space, first grade student Nikilai Barkley said, "I think it would be beautiful like the stars." Other students were struck by the scale of the mission itself, noting the coolest thing they learned about the mission was its historical significance. "I got to watch something that had never been done before," said Emersyn McNight. Some students were already thinking like future scientists, forming questions of their own. Oscar Turnquist said he would ask an astronaut, "Why did you want to go to outer space?"
