Spring caddis hatch draws anglers to Watauga River

Springtime on the Watauga River offers active trout and buzzing caddis hatches, attracting anglers from across the country to its cold, steady waters. The Watauga River is known for high densities of brown and rainbow trout, offering year-round fishing and multiple access points along its 78-mile riverbank. Will Pippin, owner of Johnson City Fly Fishing Company, said the experience on the Watauga River goes beyond casting a line. "People that see the Watauga River from the banks and don't get to experience floating down the river and seeing nature all around them," Pippin said. "You don't really experience the river until you're actually on the water." From the middle of the river, anglers are surrounded by a panoramic view of the Appalachian landscape, something Pippin said keeps visitors coming back. He said the river's fishery is equally appealing. Native brown trout reproduce naturally in the Watauga, while rainbow trout are regularly stocked by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Guided trips, which typically run from morning to late afternoon, are designed to make the sport accessible to anyone, regardless of experience level. Pippin said many clients travel from across the country after hearing about the Watauga and the nearby South Holston River in fly fishing circles. "A full-day trip is usually from 9 to around 5, and it includes lunch and all the equipment," he said. "You really don't have to bring anything except sunglasses. I even provide sunscreen." Instruction is a central part of the trip, especially for beginners. Guides teach everything from tying flies to setting up a rod and casting techniques. "We give you enough information and knowledge to be able to catch fish the first time going out," Pippin said. "It takes a while to really learn, but we help you get started." That learning curve often comes with a few challenges. According to Pippin, the most common mistake beginners make has little to do with technique. "People do not know how to get out in nature and just relax," he said. "The key to fly fishing is relaxation. It's not supposed to be forcing the cast. You want to be gentle and calm and let the equipment do the work." Patience becomes especially important during seasonal hatches, when insect activity drives feeding patterns. In the spring, the river sees a large caddis hatch, while sulfur hatches dominate the summer months. "It's amazing to watch trout come up and eat flies off the top of the water," Pippin said. "During a hatch, they're just going crazy." For those wading into the river, safety is another key consideration. Water levels can rise quickly when dams release water, creating potentially dangerous conditions. "Before you wade fish, you need to check the generation schedule," Pippin said. "Once the water starts coming up, you have a very limited time to get out." He said some of his favorite wade fishing stretches include areas near Sycamore Shoals State Park, where anglers can access long sections of the river by foot. Even with preparation and guidance, Pippin said part of the sport's appeal lies in its unpredictability. "It's like anybody that fishes," Pippin said. "You just don't know if your cast is going to land something big or come up dry." That uncertainty often leads to memorable moments, especially for first-time anglers. Pippin recalled one standout catch from the past year. "I had an 80-year-old lady fishing with her husband for the first time, and she caught a 28-inch brown trout," he said. "She was super excited." Moments like that, he said, are what keep people returning to the Watauga — not just for the fish, but for the experience of being on the water.
