Washington County opens school enrollment window

Families seeking a different school placement can apply later this month as Washington County Schools opens its annual enrollment window. The district said parents and guardians may submit open enrollment or contract applications from March 23 through April 11 for the 2026-27 school year, with notifications expected by June 20. Kindergarten decisions may take longer, with some notices not arriving until late July, according to the district. Open enrollment allows students to attend a school outside their zoned assignment if space is available at the requested campus and grade level, according to Washington County Schools. Available seats are based on projected enrollment and capacity, and the district noted that adjustments may occur during the application period to stay in compliance with state law. If requests exceed available spots, the district will conduct a lottery to determine placement. Students not selected will be placed on a waiting list for possible openings. Families living outside the district may apply for contract enrollment through the same process. Washington County Schools said students accepted on contract must maintain satisfactory attendance, academics and behavior to remain enrolled. The district said that students already attending their current K-12 school do not need to reapply but must complete an intent form indicating they plan to stay. Students wishing to transfer, as well as those moving from pre-K to kindergarten or from middle school to a non-zoned high school, must submit a new application during the open enrollment window.
