ROUNDUP: Betsy hands Science Hill first loss of young season

ELIZABETHTON — Science Hill baseball had nearly gone through the first two weeks of the season perfect in the loss column. But that was until Friday at Elizabethton. The Cyclones used a four-run fourth to move past the 'Toppers, 9-4. Following a two-run double for Haydon Smelser in the top of the first, Elizabethton got a run on a wild pitch, another on an error, and a third courtesy of a base hit by Justin Whitehead in the bottom half of the inning. Darren Hill gave the Hilltoppers the lead back in the third with a two-run knock to left, but Betsy answered with one run in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to pull away. Cyclone backstop J.D. Hooks had the big blow, a two-run double in the fourth, his lone hit of the game. Jack Blevins had a two-hit game out of the leadoff spot. Elizabethton mostly used a "Johnny All-Staff" approach on the mound, but got three quality innings from Ryan Kasting, who picked up the winning decision. Smelser and Anderson Craft each had a pair of hits for the Hilltoppers. Dobyns-Bennett 7, Unicoi County 0 KINGSPORT — Walker Bishop only allowed two hits across five innings in a strong start for the Indians. Taylor Blankenship smashed a two-run double as part of a three-RBI day, Andrew Reilly tripled and singled, and every D-B starter reached base at the plate. Hudson Berry and Broox Bennett both singled for the Blue Devils to account for their two hits. The King's Academy 13, West Ridge 9 BLOUNTVILLE — The Lions posted a four-spot in the top of the seventh to gain some much-needed insurance late. Tucker Flanagin was just a triple away from the cycle as he drove in four RBI and scored four times. Zyricq Lacle added three more runs driven in for TKA as Caleb Wallace picked up the win after not allowing an earned run in three innings. Dale Martin and Jaxson Bolling each drove in two RBI at the dish for the Wolves. Ty Malak doubled and drew three walks on the evening. Daniel Boone 6, Morristown West 1 ELIZABETHTON — The Trailblazers erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth to earn a victory. Braden Gore went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, Warner Stallard allowed just two hits and a run in seven innings, and Tanner Orth had two hits, including a double. Collin Rouse hit a pair of singles for the Trojans in the extra-inning affair. Sullivan East 8, Johnson County 4 MOUNTAIN CITY — T.K. Crowder went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Patriots. Peyton Lingerfelt, Luke Blevins, Jonah Smith, and Josh Durham all had multi-hit games for East, who posted a crooked six-spot in the fourth inning. Kaden Blevins had three hits and a run scored out of the leadoff spot for the Longhorns. University High 2, Chuckey-Doak 0 AFTON — Braeden Brothers tossed a complete-game shutout for the Buccaneers, scattering four hits and not walking a batter while striking out five. Anthony Margotta doubled as part of a two-hit game while Grant Gentry accounted for UH's only RBI of the night, a first-inning double. Kiptyn Ball, Ben Palazzo, Randall Sauceman, and Lynkin Cutshaw all singled for the Black Knights. West Greene 15, Unaka 0 (Game 1) MOSHEIM — A five-run first and a seven-run second put the Buffaloes up big early. Jhonen Bath doubled home two runs, Carter Stills tallied three RBI, and Jayden Cox drove home a pair more. Bailey Cannon went 2-for-2 with a double for the Rangers. West Greene 9, Unaka 0 (Game 2) MOSHEIM — Ethan Carpenter walked three times and scored two runs for the Buffaloes. Bronson Brown earned the win after allowing four hits and no walks in five innings. He recorded five strikeouts. Brycen Eggers' second-inning double was the Rangers' only extra-base hit. SOFTBALL Dobyns-Bennett 3, Gibbs 2 HENDERSONVILLE — The Lady Indians were the beneficiaries of an error that allowed Mary Kate Lively to score the game-winning run. Phoenix Ahles had a pair of singles, including a two-RBI knock in the third inning. After giving up two runs in the first, Allie McConnelee settled in to earn a winning decision while striking out six hitters. Elizabethton 4, Tennessee High 1 ELIZABETHTON — Sadie Williams doubled as part of a two-hit, two-RBI night for the Lady Cyclones. Kaitlyn Gryder had two hits and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. Lacey Gobble was dominant pitching for Betsy, allowing just one run, not issuing a walk and striking out nine. Carleigh Warwick went 3-for-3 while scoring the Lady Vikings' only run of the game. Sullivan East 10, Portland 5 HENDERSONVILLE — The Lady Patriots picked up their first win of the season courtesy of a five-run fourth inning. Ryleigh Joyner hit two singles and scored a pair of runs and Jamie Mendoza drove in two RBI. Bryanna Roberts went 2-for-3 with three runs driven in for the Lady Panthers. Cherokee 10, Hancock County 0 ROGERSVILLE — Baylee Russell's inside-the-park home run punctuated a seven-run fourth inning for the Lady Chiefs. Ally Chandler doubled twice out of the ninth spot in the order, Lydia Augusta tripled, and both Anna Boyd and Jaylyn Cutshall each had two hits. Millie Collins hit a double for the Lady Indians. West Greene 14, Happy Valley 4 ELIZABETHTON — Miranda Hunter tripled, scored three runs and drove in three RBI as part of a 3-for-3 game for the Lady Buffaloes. Amanda Owens also had a three-hit night as Abagale Jackson and Victoria Ramsey each hit a pair of singles. Tierra Collins had a pair of runs driven in for the Lady Warriors. South Greene 7, University High 4 JOHNSON CITY — Reece Williams went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and had two RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Bucs. She also only allowed one earned run in the circle. Hailey Williamson drove in two runs for the Lady Rebels as South Greene was aided by six UH errors. Johnson County 3, Hampton 1 ERWIN — Clara Wilson allowed just one hit and struck out eight in the circle for the Lady Longhorns. She also singled, walked, and scored a run at the plate. Makenzie Shaw roped an RBI double to aid Wilson's pitching effort. Mattie Holtsclaw had the Lady Bulldogs' lone hit while Nalei Deloach scored their one run. Unaka 4, Cloudland 2 ERWIN — Haley Davis came through with a two-run single in the fourth inning out of the ninth spot in the order for the Lady Rangers. Devalynn Harter had a two-hit night and Kelsey Pasquale did not allow a run in 2 ⅔ innings of work. Ayla Horney doubled home a run and scored a run for the Lady Highlanders. SOCCER Providence Academy 4, Smith County 0 GATLINBURG — Cage Merkel scored twice to help Providence Academy open the Smoky Mountain Cup victorious. Jeremiah Moore added one goal, and Carter Larson converted a penalty kick. Jacoby Puhr, Marcus Poff and Luke Severson each had one assist, while Austin Beckner made six saves to get the clean sheet. Tim Philippi had D-B's lone shot on net in the contest, which was saved by Page keeper David Hollmann.
