How Johnson City School's Five-Year Strategic Plan supports our community

I was asked to write a guest column on how public education supports progress in our community. I believe the best evidence will be to outline how the Johnson City School Board creates five-year strategic plans that identify desired key results, and related ways to measure the achievement of those results. Achieving these key results advances academic excellence and strengthens the social, economic and community fabric of Johnson City. Our current strategic plan focuses on five key areas: achievement, community engagement, human resources, infrastructure and wellness and safety. Academic Achievement A community's long‑term growth relies on a highly educated population. The plan's focus on rigorous, standards‑based instruction, improved interventions and expanded post‑secondary pathways empowers students with the skills needed for college, technical careers and civic life. This past year, 10 of our 11 schools scored "A" and the 11th scored a "B" rating from the state, one of the best district performances anywhere. Johnson City students consistently score among the top districts statewide on TCAP and ACT measures. Strong school achievement makes our community attractive to school age families, the city benefits from a steady pipeline of educated new workforce members, all of which in turn encourages new and existing business expansion. Community Engagement Strong neighborhood schools anchor strong communities. By expanding partnerships with local businesses, civic organizations, and families, the district cultivates shared ownership in student success. Initiatives such as community job fairs, and communication platforms like Parent Square effectively distribute school and community newsletters. Extracurricular activities like sports and clubs are a source of shared experience and pride. These school efforts nurture a unified community identity around shared values and pride. Human Resources Recruiting and retaining a highly qualified workforce ensures instructional quality and organizational stability. Competitive pay, ongoing professional development and mentorship programs are key to attracting and developing top teachers and staff. Our dedicated teachers and staff deliver the outstanding educational results for key area number 1. In addition, the competitive pay enhances Johnson City's attractiveness as a desired destination for those with educational related job skills. Infrastructure Infrastructure investments for school renovations, improved security, expanded wireless networks and the construction of new facilities like Towne Acres enhance both safety and learning environments. Students need access to modern technology, so Johnson City Schools provide a Google Chromebook to every middle and high school student. This ensures these students have access to the latest safe advancing technologies. Students familiar with state-of-the-art technologies will be prepared for the future workforce needs of our city. Wellness and Safety All children deserve a healthy, secure environment. Growing up in the age of social media makes it harder than ever. Johnson City Schools emphasize mental‑health support resources like behavioral counselors, and interventions for students in crisis. Our safety infrastructure assures safe students and staff. Programs addressing physical wellness, digital wellness and student behavioral health can also reduce long‑term societal costs by helping students thrive now. Together, these five key areas form our strategy for achieving successful public education, which in turn positions Johnson City for sustained educational, economic and community success. I would like to thank all the amazing school staff and past boards that put the work into actualizing our strategy.
