ROUNDUP: Science Hill baseball downs UH on opening day

JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill's baseball team plated five runs between the fifth and sixth innings, opening the 2026 baseball season victorious over a Class 1A state tournament regular. The Hilltoppers took down University High 6-1 at TVA Credit Union Ballpark on opening night Monday. Cooper Greer went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the way, driving in three runs for Science Hill. It was Nate Stoots who delivered the go-ahead RBI hit, following Haydon Smelser's one-out double with a triple to right, breaking the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth inning. Greer's ensuing RBI double made it 3-1, and Carter McKinney had an RBI single in the sixth. Stoots tripled twice, and McKinney had two hits. Levi Torbett got the win in relief, striking out four in two innings of work. Knox Poston pulled UH even with an RBI single in the fourth, and Anthony Margotta doubled. David Crockett 7, Chuckey-Doak 3 AFTON — Brayden Page and Gabe Story drove in three runs on back-to-back doubles in the first inning, as Crockett opened the season victorious. Carson Bradburn added to it with a solo home run in the fourth, and he finished with three runs scored and two RBIs. Story went four innings and struck out five to get the win. Collin Bishop went 2-for-4 to lead the Knights. Providence Academy 7, Christ School (N.C.) 6 ARDEN, N.C. — Marcus Stine cleared the bases with a line-drive double in the top of the sixth, giving PA a 7-5 lead and what turned out to be the winning margin. It was Stine's third double of the game. Bradley Fields battled in two runs from the nine-hole, hitting a single and scoring once himself. Nash Martinez pitched three innings to get the win in relief, striking out eight and allowing three hits. Tennessee High 7, Lakeway Christian 6 BRISTOL, Tenn. — Rylan Lambert plated two runs on his one-out single to left in the eighth inning, giving Tennessee High the walk-off victory. The Vikings trailed 5-0 in the sixth inning before pulling even, starting with a two-run bomb by Gage Graziano. Lambert hit an RBI double and then scored the tying run on Austin Harbor's two-out single. Lambert finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Dayne Musick went 2-for-3. Traye Collette pitched the last 2 2/3 innings to earn the win. CAK takes 2 from Elizabethton MORRISTOWN — Will Kingery drove in three runs as the Warriors won 8-1 in Game 1, hitting 2-for-3 with a double. Joey Sulish struck out 12 batters over 6 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits. Rhett Slagle doubled twice for the Cyclones and scored their lone run, a double by Seth Holly. Seaton Moffett and Alex Trimble both had three hits in Game 2, a 14-2 CAK victory. Jon Tyler Slack struck out four in his six-inning complete game while scattering four hits. Marshal Holtsclaw (2-for-2, RBI) and Slagle both doubled for the Cyclones. SOFTBALL Unicoi County 11, Lakeway Christian 3 ERWIN — Lela Byrd not only struck out 14 batters in her seven-hit victory over a Division II powerhouse, but she also drove in four runs while hitting 2-for-4 with a double. Kianna Woodward went 3-for-3 with a double from her leadoff spot, and Kinley Carver had a double with two RBIs. McKinley Grubb went 2-for-3 to lead Lakeway. Science Hill 10, Sevier County 0 Isabel Meeks began her senior year — along with the Josh Edens era — with a no-hitter, striking out 12 and walking just one in her five-inning victory Monday. Not to mention her two-run double on offense. Kyleigh Metcalf (double, 4 RBIs), Piper Brewer (double, 2 RBIs), Reagan Carroll, Ainsley Craft (double) and Erin Vannoy had two hits apiece for Science Hill. BOYS SOCCER Morristown East 6, Sullivan East 0 BLUFF CITY — Zach Pierson recorded 13 saves for the Patriots, as Morristown East opened the season victorious.
