ROUNDUP: West Ridge girls upset Maryville to reach region semifinals

MARYVILLE — Better not doubt this year's West Ridge girls basketball team. The Lady Wolves, trailing much of the game, rallied in the fourth quarter and stunned District 2-4A runner-up Maryville in Friday's Region 1-4A quarterfinal round. West Ridge earned a region semifinal rematch with Morristown East with a 66-62 comeback win at James C. Campbell Gymnasium. Carter Jones, not surprisingly, led the scoring. She dropped 15 points in the third quarter alone including her second 3-pointer. Two more field goals and two foul shots in the fourth quarter gave her 33 points for the game. Teagan Tipton, who also hit two fourth-quarter buckets, joined her in double figures with 13 points. Avery Steadman scored all nine of her points on three 3-pointers, and Kyleigh Mitchell got all seven of her points in the final frame. West Ridge trailed 30-22 at the half and 47-42 entering the fourth quarter before earning its second-ever region win. Zoee Harrison led Maryville with 19 points. Maddy Hall (13) and Harper White (11) joined her in double figures. Sevier County 55, Dobyns-Bennett 18 SEVIERVILLE — Kaliyah Burden got the Bearettes going, and D-B couldn't do much against their suffocating defense, falling behind 32-12 at the half. Burden scored 16 of her 21 points in the first half. Addison Brewer joined her in double figure with 11. Carlee Cradic, Ashlynn Chappell and Sally McReynolds all scored four points for D-B. Greeneville 90, David Crockett 57 GREENEVILLE — Jordan Swatzell buried nine 3-pointers for the Lady Greene Devils, scoring 29 points as Greeneville opened a 44-25 halftime lead. Maria Lyde fired in 22 points, 12 in the second quarter. Brylee Tullock added 20 points, and Julia Woolsey had 13. Kayleigh Doner scored a game-high 32 points for Crockett, which led 17-14 after one quarter. Autumn Wynn joined her in double figures with 11. Cloudland 56, Washburn 40 WASHBURN — The Lady Highlanders did in fact secure a region semifinal rematch with Unaka, leading 27-22 at the half and 43-29 after three. Abriella Jones led the balanced effort with 10 points. Eowyn McCoury (three 3s) scored nine, followed closed by Regan Blair (8-of-8 free throws) and Savannah McCoury (two 3s) with eight apiece and Makinna Shell with seven. Ebany Hill led Washburn with 16 points, and Taylie Proffitt had nine. Cosby 58, Hampton 41 COSBY — Matisse Bible fired in nine first-quarter points to spark the District 2-1A champs, finishing with 19 as the Lady Eagles gained the upper hand. Stella Raines poured in 12 points, all in the first half, and Azariah Spurgeon scored 10. Zayli Spencer got her nine points in the third quarter. Hannah Baird and Gracie Jenkins both hit three 3-pointers for Hampton, Baird leading the scoring with 13 points. Hannah Smith scored 10 points, and Jenkins nine. Honaker 47, Twin Springs 44 GRUNDY — The Lady Titans couldn't get either of their final two 3-point looks to fall in overtime, as Honaker advanced to the Region 1D championship game. Twin Springs fell behind 21-10 in the second quarter after two technical fouls, but ended the half on an 8-0 run to get within 21-18. The Lady Titans rallied to take a 38-35 lead in the fourth quarter, before Honaker responded. The teams were tied at 43 after regulation. Carey Keene led the Lady Tigers, scoring 13 of her 18 points in the first half. JuJu Farmer finished with 14, including three of Honaker's four overtime points. Kenzie Gillenwater went down fighting for Twin Springs, scoring six fourth-quarter points to end with 17. Isabella Dingus and Emma Ross both had nine, while Sarah Davidson buried two 3s for her six points. BOYS Twin Springs 60, Grundy 50 GRUNDY — Clay Ross took over in the fourth quarter once again, leading the Titans back to the VHSL state quarterfinals. Having ended the first quarter with a slam dunk for a 13-9 lead, he helped Twin Springs expand its 37-36 lead in the fourth quarter to 44-37 and later 51-42. Ross knocked two of his five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, where he also went 6-of-8 at the foul line to end the game with 30 points. Eli Dougherty hit the Titans' other two field goals in the final frame, finishing the game with 14. Pietro Liberatore joined them in double figures with 10. Kyle Hunt and Ethan McClanahan led Grundy with 16 and 15 points respectively. Twin Springs will face Patrick Henry in Saturday's Region 1D finals. Women's AAC Tournament Milligan 64, Pikeville 61 KINGSPORT — Semaj Clark had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Buffaloes once again reach Saturday's AAC final. Lina Lyon joined her in double figures with 14 points. Makenzie Bremer and Callie Reeder both had 10. Millingan led 33-25 at the half, before Pikeville pulled even at 41 entering the fourth quarter.
