ROUNDUP: Jones rewrites record book to carry Volunteer over Greeneville

CHURCH HILL — Jeremiah Jones gave a record-setting performance Volunteer boys basketball fans won't soon forget. Jones gunned in 44 points to help the Falcons clinch a second-place tie in District 2-3A. His efforts helped Volunteer take down Greeneville 94-80 on Friday night. The 45-point outing was confirmed to be a Volunteer single-game record. When the first quarter ended, Jones already had six field goals and 14 points to his name. He had 20 at the half, before adding six more field goals in his 13-point third quarter. Griffin Head also hit double figures for the Falcons, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second half. He knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter. Amarion Graves had eight, and Brennan Greene seven. Brayden Kidwell led Greeneville's balanced effort with 19 points. Parker Quillen had 18, Taren Claridy 17 and Zy Neal 13. Quillen buried four 3s with Neal, Claridy and Kidwell each hitting three. Elizabethton 74, West Ridge 52 ELIZABETHTON — Evan Chambers capped his 23-point night in style, scoring five field goals during his 11-point fourth quarter. Hudson Pate (17) and Nathan Bailey (15) joined him in double figures, and Bo Armstrong scored eight as Elizabethton led 40-21 at the half and 50-38 after three. Will Holmes led the Wolves with 23 points, hitting three 3s and 10-of-12 free throws. Grant Thompson (four 3s) scored 16 points, and Mason Stump had nine. Hampton 61, North Greene 53 BAILEYTON — Chase Davenport delivered again for the Bulldogs, who improved to 6-0 in district play. He shot 5-of-9 from 3-point range and scored 22 points to lead the way. Colby Clark added 17 points with six rebounds, and Tuff Robinson 11 with five boards. The two combined to go 8-of-11 at the foul line, while Bryce Fagan (6 points) grabbed 13 boards. Jaiden Bailey and Tyler Britton, who scored his 1,000th point and buried four 3s in the game, both had 16 for the Huskies. University High 61, Cloudland 54 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Mekhi Yocum fired in 14 points, hitting from deep three times to lead University High to its second district win of the year. Knox Poston scored nine of his 13 points in the second half. Janson West and Zulum Aninyei both had eight points. Gavyn Shell led Cloudland with 19 points, making 13-of-16 free throws. Grayson Cole had 10, with Uriah Jarrett and Bryce Birchfield adding eight apiece. GIRLS West Ridge 72, Elizabethton 53 ELIZABETHTON — Carter Jones gunned in 20 points, 13 in the second half to help West Rudge put away the Lady Cyclones. Teagan Tipton scored 10 first-half points before ending with 16, including two 3s. Millie Shelton and Averie Steadman both hit from 3-point range twice and scored 13 points apiece. Reagan May led Elizabethton with 17 points. Jamira Smalls fired in 12, with Addison Bunn and Sydney Minton scoring 10 apiece. Cloudland 65, University High 17 ROAN MOUNTAIN — The Lady Highlanders seized full control early, going on a 23-2 run over the last 10 minutes of the first half. Makinna Shell and Abriella Jones led the balanced effort for Cloudland with 11 and 10 points respectively. In all, 12 players scored for Cloudland with Eowyn McCoury adding nine, Abby Clawson seven and Savannah McCoury six. Maggie Ryder led UH with seven points. North Greene 68, Hampton 34 BAILEYTON — Eva Leonard, one of three players to score in double figures for North Greene, knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points. Ella Head (three 3s) and Tralyn Southerland scored 14 and 13 points respectively for the Lady Huskies, who opened a 43-20 halftime lead and cruised from there. Hannah Baird led Hampton with 12 points. Hannah Smith and Gracie Jenkins (three 3s) both had nine. Greeneville 67, Volunteer 17 CHURCH HILL — Brylee Tullock buried four 3-pointers, scoring 26 of her 28 points in the first half for Greeneville. Maria Lyde scored 14 first-half points and finished with 16 while blocking a career-best eight shots, and Julia Woolsey added 10 points. Elisabeth Byington and Emma Miller both had four for Volunteer, which fell behind 24-4 after one quarter and 53-6 at the half.
