ROUNDUP: Dobyns-Bennett garners seven first place finishers, team title at Region 1 wrestling

MORRISTOWN — Seven Dobyns-Bennett wrestlers captured Region 1 Class AA individual championships on Saturday at Morristown East, leading the Indians to the team title as well. Mason Jakob, who is looking for his fourth straight state championship, was one of those seven winners, claiming the title at 132 pounds. He was joined on the winner's podium by Bryson Church (106), Derek Wiseman (144), Noah Watkins (113), Peter Ryan (120), Rankin Burress (175) and Vaughn Pulitzer (126). Dobyns-Bennett finished with 291.5 points, followed by Science Hill with 218.5 and Tennessee High with 158.5 points. The TSSAA Individual Wrestling Championships will be held on Feb. 20-21 at the Williamson County Expo Center in Franklin. Science Hill had three winners, including Haiden Cox (285), Kendall Lewis (138) and Sean Scott (165). Max Minor will represent Tennessee High in the 150-pound weight class. GIRLS WRESTLING Nine area high school girls won Region 1 titles on Friday at Morristown East. Science Hill, David Crockett and Elizabethton each had two winners, led by Sawyer Ward (152 pounds) and Kaeli Cross (114), a duo that will participate in the TSSAA Girls' Wrestling Championship on Feb. 20-21 in Franklin. David Crockett's first place finishers included Kylea Koester (132) and Soniyah Taylor (185), while Elizabethton's top placers included Sadie Kellerman (120) and Sophie Swink (145). Others to claim region crowns include MacKenzie Zeigler (Daniel Boone, 235), Evelyn Norman (Dobyns-Bennett, 107) and Jolee Meade (Sullivan East, 165). Jefferson County won the Region 1 team competition with 148 points, followed by Science Hill with 134 and Sullivcan East with 127 points. BOYS BASKETBALL HAMPTON 76, VOLUNTEER 74 Freshman Colby Clark continues to impress, contributing 29 points and five rebounds as the Bulldogs pulled out a thrilling two-point home win over the Falcons. Chase Davenport added 15 points and Bryce Fagan tossed in 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Bulldogs, which trailed 26-12 after one quarter and 41-34 at the halftime break. Hampton added 23 in the third quarter and 19 more in the fourth, which was just enough to pick up the non-district win. Tuff Robinson added six points, four assists and three steals, while Jackson Smith tallied six points for the Bulldogs, which shot 54.5 percent from the field. The Bulldogs (16-8) currently lead District 1-1A. Volunteer (16-9), which sits on top of District 2-3A, was paced with 26 points by Griffin Head, who finished with four 3s. Brennon Green had five 3s and 17 points and Amarion Graves had 11 points for the Falcons. UNION 63, GATE CITY 54 2 OT Kam Bostic scored 26 points and Braxton Bunch added 22 as Union escaped with a Mountain 7 District double-overtime home win over the Blue Devils. Gate City (8-10, 7-2) and the Bears were tied at 45 after regulation and at 50 after one extra period before Union (11-7, 3-2) pulled away for win. Parker Jenkins paced Gate City with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, in addition to eight rebounds. Zayne Reed tallied 14 points and five assists, Kaden Houseright added 10 points and Brennan McDonald tossed in six in the loss in a costly loss for the Blue Devils with Abingdon visiting on Monday. Union also received six points and seven boards from Rayvon Jones and six points and four boards from Carlos Anderson. DAVID CROCKETT 51, SULLIVAN EAST 46 Caleb Eaves scored 14 points and Nolan Street added 13 to lift the Pioneers to a District 1-3A road win at Sullivan East. David Crocket (19-7, 4-2) led 33-20 at halftime before the Patriots trimmed that margin to 43-35 going into the final period. That was enough for the Pioneers to hang for the win. Cam Gouge added nine points, Colton Mullis tossed in eight and Aden Britton had seven for David Crockett. Sullivan (10-16, 0-6) was paced by Logan Shuttle with nine points and seven points each from Grady Burke and Ryan Hurley. GIRLS BASKETBALL DAVID CROCKETT 63, SULLIVAN EAST 59 Kayleigh Doner scored 28 points to lead the Pioneers to a District 1-3A win at Sullivan East. Maison Orr tallied eight points and Alexis Hawkins canned seven for David Crockett (1-5, 5-14), which trailed 26-22 at halftime, but outscored the Patriots, 19-11, in the third quarter and held on for its first District 1-3A win of the season. Audrey Easley led Sullivan East (7-18, 1-5) with 20 points and Sophie Johnson added 14. Ryleigh Joyner contributed nine points for the Patriots.
