Jonesborough Repertory Theatre performs comedy 'Noises Off'

What happens when a play goes wrong in every possible way? Doors slam, props vanish and tempers flare as the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre opens its winter production of the fast-paced play "Noises Off" this week. The comedy follows a struggling theatre company attempting to stage a British bedroom farce titled "Nothing On," only to watch the production unravel during its final dress rehearsal, according to a press release from the JRT. In the first act, forgotten lines, misplaced props and romantic mix-ups quickly send the show veering toward disaster. The play's second act turns the set around to expose the backstage pandemonium, revealing simmering rivalries and misunderstandings that erupt into slapstick mayhem. By the third act, the company's collapse is complete as the performance disintegrates in full view of the audience, according to the release. Written by Michael Frayn, "Noises Off" is often described as one of the funniest farces ever written, blending affectionate homage to live theatre with sharp mockery of its most familiar mishaps, according to the release. The release notes production relies on precise timing, rapid-fire dialogue and physical comedy to pull viewers into the mayhem. The Jonesborough production is directed by Pam Johnson and Lucas Schmidt, with stage management by Sheila Laughlin, Angie Hyche and Alyssa Curtis. The cast includes Jordan Click, Laura Click, Alyssa Curtis, Liz Dollar, Steve Humphrey, Eric Hyche, Joseph Rogers, Sarah Sanders and Lucas Schmidt. Performances run from Jan. 16 through Feb. 1, with evening shows Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $18 for students and seniors, according to the release. The show is rated PG-13. Due to fire code, all patrons, including children, must have a valid ticket for admission. Organizers noted that streets from Fox Street to Second Avenue will be closed Jan. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and patrons should plan accordingly. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the JRT box office at (423) 330-3367. Group rates are available for parties of 15 or more by contacting the box office in advance. The theatre also offers wheelchair-accessible seating, which must be arranged through the box office at the time of purchase. The production is sponsored by Dermatology Associates, Bob Fuller and Guy Mauldin and Lynda Wexler, according to the release.
