STOMP coming to Niswonger Performing Arts

Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville will welcome STOMP for a performance on Tuesday. STOMP is internationally known for its one of a kind performance. The group uses everyday objects and turns them into instruments. Andrew Patrick, tour residence director and performer, has been with STOMP since 2002. Patrick said that one of his favorite routines involved a shopping trolley filled with items. "The trolley makes a couple different sounds," Patrick said. "It's really funky and cool and energetic and I love that." Patrick said they utilize items such as brooms that can make up to three different sounds. "The brushes, knocking the head on the ground and then … holding the broom upright and … hitting the butt of it on the ground when we're standing up," Patrick said. Patrick said that out of the entire performance, the most unique aspect is that no words are spoken. "We have to portray every message we're trying to get across without talking," Patrick said. Patrick said that out of the eight members on stage, audience members can find at least one character that they can relate to. He said when he first saw a performance, he felt as if he was watching a bunch of people he already knew. STOMP is not only a unique performance because of what happens on stage, but it breaks the fourth wall engaging the audience. "We … lead them in with rhythm and play games with them in the beginning," Patrick said. "It really sucks them in." Patrick said if you've seen the show before, don't expect to see the same thing again. He said they are constantly changing routines and finding new ways to create sound. "It's different every time," Patrick said. Patrick said that there is a basis of choreography for each character but a lot of what the audience sees is improved. He said the show is for all ages and he urges people to come to the show. "It's very action packed — very unique," Patrick said. "Most people will be able to relate in some fashion to it," Patrick said. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased on the Niswonger Performing Arts website.
