Positive points: Challenges and changes

Lots of challenges and lots of changes — that is how 2026 is shaping up for many of us. Everything you read or listen to says it is time for change. There should be a small voice in all of us that warns us not to heed everything we hear but to evaluate the source. I am not saying that I hear voices or that I want you to start hearing voices, although, this could be interesting... just kidding. When you look at the things that make up your life, such as family, church, career, friends and organizations you are involved in, are you satisfied? I was reading an article on setting goals and it said to "Work to understand your inner critic," "Observe thoughts that trap you with fear and prevent you from achieving your objectives" and "Write these down on a piece of paper, then crumple it up and throw it away to symbolize your freedom from thoughts that interfere with your goals and dreams." It makes it sound very simple, but change for many people is very hard. Change is hard for me. It does help to have a plan that outlines goals and your steps for achieving them. It is good to plan for the future, but so many people spend too much time worrying and planning for the future that they don't experience the day they are living. I keep this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson in the window in my kitchen: "One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year." Also, in the inner most folds of my Positive Points ideas/topics file, I keep a little green card I picked up at Hyman's Seafood Market about 20 years ago. It is some of the best fresh seafood you can get in Charleston, SC. On the back of the card, it has "13 Teachings of Rabbi Y'sreal Salanter." I just wanted to share a few with you to contemplate in the New Year: "TRUTH: Do not say anything unless you know in your heart that it is true. "ALERTNESS: A minute is too precious to waste; time must be properly utilized. "DILIGENCE: Decide what needs to be done, then do it enthusiastically and well. "RESPECT: Honor every person. He may not be your friend, but he is a human being. "PEACE OF MIND: Be calm and composed and let it show in everything you do. "GENTLENESS: Wise men speak gently. Develop the habit and you will find yourself being listened to." Yes, there are 7 more I could list but I think this is enough for the beginning of the year. May we all do everything possible in our circle of influence to have a positive attitude towards others every day of this year. Happy New Year! ••• Linda Poland is Jonesborough's resident storyteller.
