BIRDING The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, will offer a monthly Birding in the Gap series on the second Saturday of each month. Participants should meet at the front gate of the museum. The Birding in the Gap monthly series will be held rain or shine. Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars are encouraged but not required. Registration is not required for this program. FESTIVALS The Gathering in the Gap Music Festival at the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park in Big Stone Gap will offer a one-of-a-kind evening of performances by an eclectic mix of acclaimed performers. Gathering in the Gap is a community-grounded, immersive festival hosted by the Friends of Southwest Virginia Museum that preserves and perpetuates authentic, traditional and historical music and folk arts of Southwest Virginia. This year's festival will be held on Saturday, May 23. Featured performers will be Sister Sadie, Dave Eggar and David Shenton featuring Erin Shields and Sasha Lazard, and the Lonesome River Band. In addition to the featured Main Stage performances, Gathering in the Gap will include songwriting and music competitions, music jams, various historical and cultural programming, crafts and games for children, the "Gathering Place" Beer and Wine Garden, the Stitch in Time Quilt Show, a Camp & Carve, and more. Antique, food and craft vendors will also be on site. GUITAR LESSONS The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department will offer beginner and adult guitar lessons this winter. The lessons will take place every Tuesday from Jan. 20 through Feb. 24 at the V.O. Dobbins Sr. Complex at 301 Louis St. Beginner lessons will run from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. Adult lessons will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. For ages 7 and up. Cost is $100 per person. No prior experience is necessary for the beginner lessons. NATURE Bays Mountain Park has an interactive exhibit in the Nature Center titled "Discover Our Appalachian Highlands Home." PLANETARIUM Bays Mountain Park has announced its latest planetarium show, "The Sun: Our Living Star," where viewers will discover the amazing secrets of our closest star. "The Sun: Our Living Star" debuted Jan. 2 and will continue showing as the main feature in the Planetarium Theater through April 30. The 40-minute program is being shown Tuesday through Friday at 4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 4 p.m. This program will be followed by a brief tour of the current evening sky. The alternate planetarium feature showing Saturdays and Sunday at 2 p.m. through Feb. 28 will be "Appalachian Skies."
