The Reel Thing: Tips on staying warm while fishing in winter

Even as the weather gets colder as we enter the winter, fishing still can be one of the best ways to spend time in East Tennessee. That becomes even more apparent with the TWRA continuing its winter trout stocking program. But, if you are going to be out around the area's local waterways, it's important to stay warm. Possibly the most important element of staying warm in the elements is to stay dry. As the weather cools, so does the water, to the tune of near-freezing during the height of the winter season. So, make sure waders don't have a leak in them, try to wear moisture-wicking materials, and keep a dry towel nearby for your hands after handling fish. Speaking of hands, keeping your extremities warm will allow you to stay out for longer. Gloves, hand warmers, and wool socks all can help keep your hands and feet from freezing. For your head, consider either a wool cap or a ski cap. When in doubt on what materials are good for the outdoors, just know most anything is a better alternative to cotton. Cotton, for all its benefits, soaks water quickly and takes a long time to dry out. Other miscellaneous notes that could be beneficial to staying warm include drinking plenty of fluids. Water would probably be best, if it's not the warmest. Avoid alcohol, especially in the water, as it actually brings down core body temperature. Also, try to have a lighter and some fire-starting material when you go out. If someone takes a dunk into the frigid water, the ability to be near a fire could prove to be crucial.
