Names of proponents of medical school seen on its campus

The names of community and elected leaders who lent a hand in championing the creation of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine can be found on many of the buildings located on the college's campus on the grounds of the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, and at East Tennessee State University.Originally named the Quillen-Dishner College of Medicine, the facility became the James H. Quillen College of Medicine in 1989. Quillen, who died in 2003, was a Republican who served as congressman of Tennessee's 1st District from 1962 until his retirement in 1996. He spearheaded federal efforts in Congress to get one of the five medical schools funded under the Teague-Cranston Act established in Johnson City.Other names and facilities include:• Stanton-Gerber Hall, which is Building 178 on the grounds of the VA, houses the administrative offices of the medical school. It is named for Dr. Paul Stanton, a former dean of the medical school who later served 15 years as president of ETSU until his retirement in 2012, and the late Dr. Carl Gerber, who retired as director of the VA in 2005 after serving in that role for 13 years. The two are credited with heading up the state/federal project to locate the medical school's resources to the the VA by renovating historic buildings on the grounds of Mountain Home.• The Robert J. "Bob" Good Auditorium is located in Stanton-Gerber Hall. It is named for former state Rep. Bob Good, R-Johnson City, who was among the state lawmakers in Northeast Tennessee who led efforts to establish the medical school and to override Gov. Winfield Dunn's veto of legislation to do so. Good, who died in 2004, served in the state House of Representatives for 14 years and eight years as Washington County executive.• Carl A. Jones Hall, which is Building 1 on the grounds of the VA, is home to the medical school's academic offices of internal medicine, pathology and surgery. The facility is named for Carl A. Jones, the longtime publisher of the Johnson City Press, who led efforts on the part of the newspapers he owned to voice support for the establishment of a medical school at ETSU. Jones, who died in 1992, oversaw fiery editorials rebuking Gov. Winfield Dunn's rejection of a plan to create a new medical school in Johnson City.• Charles Ed Allen Hall, which is Building 2 on the grounds of the VA, is the interprofessional destination for students interested in careers in physical rehabilitative sciences. The facility is named for Dr. Charles Allen, who was one of the first medical professionals in the area to call for the establishment of a medical school to address a regional shortage of primary care physicians. Allen, who died in 2013, served as the founding president of the Appalachian Regional Center for the Health Arts.• Ned R. McWherter Hall, which is Building 52 on the grounds of the VA, houses the medical school's Department of Psychiatry. The facility was named for former Gov. Ned Ray McWherter when he left office after serving two terms in 1994. A West Tennessee Democrat, McWherter was serving as speaker of the state House in 1974 when he was credited with casting the deciding vote to override Gov. Winfield Dunn's veto of legislation to create the college of medicine at ETSU. He died in 2011.• John P. Lamb Jr. Hall, located on ETSU's main campus, serves as a hub for the university's health-related programs, including the College of Public Health and the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. The facility is named for Dr. John P. Lamb Jr. who, while serving as dean of ETSU's College of Health, was one of the key leaders in the efforts to establish the college of medicine. He died in 1981.• The Palma L. Robinson Clinical Education Center, located at 325 North State of Franklin Road in Johnson City is the facility that brought all of the college of medicine's clinical departments together for the first time. It is named for state Rep. Palma L. Robinson, a Jonesborough dairy farmer who served 12 years in the General Assembly until his death in 1981. A Republican, Robinson was the sponsor of legislation to create the medical school in Johnson City and led the successful effort to overturn the governor's veto of that bill.
