Johnson City Parks and Recreation is offering chances for both adults and children to stay active and participate in team sports over the next several months. Youth soccer and adult softball registrations are under way now through Aug. 12.
The youth soccer program is open to children ages 3-15 as of Sept. 30 and usually draws about 1,600 players. The 3- to 5-year-old co-ed league accounts for about a third of the program, said city of Johnson City Athletic Coordinator David Carmichel. They don’t keep score in the youngest league and the children also play on a smaller field.
The other leagues are divided separately for boys and girls ages 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 with the goal of creating a learning environment for any age.
“Even if you’re 10 years old and have never played the game, it’s OK,” Carmichel said. “We don’t stress the competition as much as we do the participation because for a lot of children this is their first experience with soccer.”
The 10-game season will begin Sept. 6 with games at Civitan and Winged Deer Parks. Registration fees are $25 for each city resident and $30 for non-residents. Players can register at Keystone Community Center on Aug. 6 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Monday through Aug. 12 at the Winged Deer Park Athletic Tower from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Online registration is available now at www.myjcparks.org. A $2 convenience fee will be added to the cost of those who sign up on the Web.
“This gives parents the opportunity to do it anytime day or night in the comfort of their own homes,” Carmichel said. “The service charge is cheaper then driving out to Winged Deer.”
Parks and Recreation is also in need of coaches for the leagues. Those able to volunteer can call the athletic office at 283-5822.
As for adult softball, teams of up to 20 players can register as co-ed, men’s and women’s groups in the open, church and industrial leagues. Each team must pay an entry fee of $300 and an additional $5 for each non- city resident. At the time of sign-up, each team must provide a roster and a photo ID for each player.
Adult softball usually has about 50 teams each year and the atmosphere is more laid back than the spring season, Carmichel said. Participants can sign up at the Winged Deer Park Athletic Tower from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each team will play 10 league games and a single-elimination tournament, with the season kickoff set for Aug. 27.
