A Johnson City man was killed in a car accident just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, after he reportedly attempted to pass another vehicle on East Lakeview Drive in Johnson City.
According to Sgt. Jim Tallmadge of the Johnson City Police Department, Gordon Cranston, 53, 2305 Sarah St., died at the scene of the accident, after his Jeep Laredo lost control while trying to pass a white Chevrolet Blazer driven by Brandon Jones, 18, 1001 Henry St.
Police said neither Jones nor his passenger, Michael Coone, 20, 810 Jared Drive, were injured.
At the scene of the accident, JCPD Sgt. Scotty Carrier said Cranston’s vehicle “was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on East Lakeview Drive, approached the corner right here at Patrick Drive and came up on a vehicle (Jones) that was in transit in the same lane of traffic, (and) attempted to pass on the double yellow.”
Carrier said the (Laredo) clipped the rear driver’s side corner of the Blazer, lost control of his own vehicle, left the roadway and cut a utility pole in half and then overturned in the front yard at 1110 E. Lakeview Drive.
“He was wearing his seat belt. We don’t know of any type of impairment, but ... speed’s going to be a factor and EMS ... worked to try to get him out of there, but unfortunately he died. He’s (Cranston) still inside the vehicle,” Carrier said. “We know that there was another vehicle coming against him ... in this lane of traffic, that had to swerve to ... avoid hitting him.”
Tallmadge said speed that Cranston was traveling was unknown.
According to a JCPD news release, the police department’s Traffic Homicide Team is investigating the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
