Laws, punishments do nothing if addiction isn’t addressed

Published February 8, 2013

Ah! A chink in the armor. When we close our minds to alternative thoughts, we are not evaluating or debating the issue. We are, however, establishing a group-think that has little or no chance of resolving a problem.

The methods we currently use to resolve the DUI problem are the products of bubble thinking. As a result we continue to approve and use methods that are proving themselves to be ineffective.

We regularly add more laws, more ways to violate, and more punishment which generates more criminals, more of the unemployable, more jail cells, and more taxes.

If we venture outside the bubble, we might find addiction to be a part of the problem.

This awareness should drive us to study the nature of this thing called addiction. (HBO ran a well-researched series on addiction).

With this knowledge it would be possible to visualize a system that uses incarceration time as forced rehabilitation time.

Ah! Many in the bubble say that the afflicted have to want to quit.

This thought, however, contradicts the definition and nature of addiction.
