We donít envy the difficult decision the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Board of Control must make. The future and quality of health care in Unicoi County is at stake. Board members have been presented with two strong proposals for purchasing their financially troubled community hospital.
Thatís why we think deliberations on this acquisition should be done openly and honestly. Meeting behind closed doors does not aid in this effort.
Such secrecy breeds suspicion of board members and leads the public to question their decisions. Closed doors often indicate closed minds, and the fate of the Unicoi County hospital is too important to risk on complacency.
Our advice to the hospital board members is to open the doors and let the sun shine in. Doing so will promote greater public confidence in whatever decision you make.
