I am a student from Daniel Boone High School writing to you on the behalf of my fellow classmates, athletes and teachers who disapprove of our school lunch restrictions. The students at Daniel Boone were blaming the school cafeteria for the distastefulness of our new food. After speaking with the cafeteria manager, however, we realize that it isn’t her fault that there has been such a drastic change.
These requirements were sent from the first lady, Michelle Obama. She feels that she is decreasing the amount of children becoming obese and that she is keeping us healthy. Although while it is making some children stay healthy, it is weakening our athletes. As an athlete at Daniel Boone, I know that my body requires a certain amount of calories, unlike some students who don’t include themselves in any sports. There is no exact way for the state to know exactly how many calories each child needs.
They might go by statistics, but everyone’s body is not the same. I play three sports at my school, and I know I need more protein than an average kid at Boone. I burn off twice as many calories to where I feel weak in the middle of practice. Other athletes at different schools are feeling this way.
Based on an article I recently read, students at Mukwonago High School in Wisconsin felt so much disapproval on this change that they boycotted their school cafeteria. This cut the money that was made that day in half of what the cafeteria normally makes.
One of the football players from Mukwonago said: “A lot of us are starting to get hungry before practice even begins.”
Obviously not only is one school being affected by this, but many are. We need to make a change.
