  • Should Boy Scouts revoke ban on openly gay members?

    The Boy Scouts of America will vote on a resolution to partially rescind its ban on openly gay Scouts at a meeting in Texas on May 20. The wording of the proposed policy change is direct. It states that no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America “on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.”

    The Knoxville News Sentinel reported last week that black bears are thriving in and around the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The bears were reintroduced to the area two decades ago after their numbers were decimated by unregulated hunting and adverse habitat changes.

    A plan to revamp the Washington County Planning Commission has been snubbed by county commissioners. Washington County Mayor Dan Eldridge wanted to reduce the total number of members serving on the planing board from 15 to nine. That change would have included reducing the number county commissioners that serve on the Planning Commission from six to four.
