
Porter Vines, age 76, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born in the Valley Forge community of Carter County on March 10, 1936. He was the son of the late Lee Monroe and Gracie Williams Vines.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Vines and Jack Vines; and four sisters, Yvonne Crumley, Blanch Mosler, Louise Austin and Vergie Ann Vines.
He was a retiree of Sprint Telephone Company after thirty-seven years of service in Johnson City from 1962-1999. He also served eight years in the U.S. Army National Guard Infantry at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Basic Training, teaching 50 Caliber Machine Guns Training School. He was a member of Clifton View Baptist Church of Johnson City and was a Deacon for multiple years.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Collette Vines, of the home; one daughter, Christie Clark, of Johnson City; and granddaughter, Crystal Garland, and expected great grandson, Geremiah. He was the step father of Michael Rowe, Jonesborough, and Christopher Rowe, Kingsport; and eight grandchildren. He was also the father of Rebecca Vines Jenkins and Timothy P. Vines; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Paul, Wayne and Jerry Vines; and one sister, Elizabeth Buck.
The graveside service and interment will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the Pleasant Vale Cemetery, Chuckey, TN, with Reverend Claude Babb officiating.
A gathering of friends will follow the service at 1402 Rocky Lane, Johnson City, TN.
Active pallbearers will be David Clark, Mikie Rowe Jr. and Vincent Arnett.
The family would prefer in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Clifton View Baptist Church, 1507 Orleans Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
