Two brothers’ legal trouble got a little worse Tuesday in Jonesborough, with one removed from the courtroom after cursing a court officer and the other leaving after hearing there might be a warrant for his arrest.

Josh Hammonds, 20, and Jeffrey Hammonds, 27, are each charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder for shooting at two people Nov. 9 on Glendale Road.

Both men had a court appearance Tuesday in Washington County Criminal Court, but it was derailed during a court recess. At some point during the break, Josh Hammonds cursed at one of the bailiffs, so officers took him out of the courtroom and back to jail.

Around the same time, other officers were trying to confirm the existence of several warrants issued in Carter County for Jeffrey Hammonds’ arrest on probation violations.

After the break, and after officers confirmed the warrants, Jeffrey Hammonds was nowhere to be found.

Judge Lynn Brown issued a capias for the man’s arrest and reset the cases until April 5.

The men are charged with shooting at Keith McRae and Robert Ellis, reportedly after accusing McRae of calling the police on them for something.

Jeffrey Hammonds is free on a $10,000 bond, Josh Hammonds is being held on a $50,000 bond.
