ELIZABETHTON — A man complained to the Carter County Sheriff's Department that he had been seriously bitten by a dog on Tuesday.

Deputy Nick Andes said he responded to a call from Jonathan Widener on Howard Lipford Drive. When he arrived, he said he found Widener sitting on his front porch, bleeding profusely from his legs, arms and face.

Andes said Widener told him he was on the couch when his brother's pit bull attacked him on his legs and face. Widener said he used his right arm to fend the dog off and sustained massive injuries to his wrist. He said this was the second bite he has sustained in a week from the dog.

Widener was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital for treatment. The dog was placed in quarantine.

I guess that would be the simple-minded person's way of looking at the situation. Perhaps there's more to this story than you can understand.

Let us know the "proper response" to an animal who does this. Please explain it to us in simple-minded terms. I await the truth.

well lets see we could do some research to see how the dog has been treated. I personally own a pit and she is great around all my kids and anyone that comes to our house. She also cuddles with our 5lb Yorkie!!! I'm sick of the media giving pits a bad name, how many people heard about the Pomeranian that mauled a 2 year old and killed it a few years ago? People are bit by labs everyday but wheres the reports about that?

I know of a pit bull that is so gentle and loving around people. Any breed of dog can be mean. It is just how the dog is treated. If you abuse any dog, of course it is going to retaliate against you. I think there is more to this store than just " i was laying on the couch and it attacked me". Dogs dont attack unless they are feeling threatened.

My daughter owns a pit bull and he is a very gentle animal. He loves people and is friendly and sweet. Pits have unfortunately gotten a bad reputation from all the illiterate rednecks who chain them up and teach them to be mean.

Pit-bulls are wonderful animals. It's unfortunate they get a bad wrap. I wonder if the guy provoked the dog???

You don't have to be simple minded to have the common sense to what needs to be done. If a dog (whatever breed) attacks a human unprovoked (unless the dog is protecting a home or person) it needs to be quarantined and put down. Some of you have a pit bull that is a great pet and I agree they can be, but its kinda like profiling, there s a reason for these breeds get an earned 'rap sheet'. Meaning this breed has proven behavioral issues that are unacceptable.
